Buying a Category bike and HPI check

For the first time I'm considering buying a bike that is cat N. I've been told by the seller it is, otherwise I don't know if I'd ever known unless it's made obvious on the V5 or something.

I'm told it's due to some cut wires that have since been repaired, but I'd like to find out for sure myself. Is the only way to do this by paying for an online HPI check? And if so, any recommendations for a good site to use?

Apparently it won't affect insurance, I've done a comparison and Swinton comes up cheapest but they don't ask if the bike has been written off or anything - bit odd...

I used carvertical for my Porsche. It was worth it for that car, I think it was about a tenner? I used the code from a Youtuber I watch, I think it's Jayemm10. Gets you 10% off.

I used some other cheaper one for my GSXR, but here's the rub... If you *know* it's an N, then it's well worth spending more on the HPI check IMO, and Carvertical does all sorts of shizz that the cheaper HPI checks don't seem to do. For cars they often have pictures of the damage even if it's not recorded. I'm not 100% sure how they do this but if they get it from insurance companies and repairers there is a strong chance there is a picture of the damage (assuming bikes are the same as cars).

The cheap one I used was 'instant car check'.

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

Cat N is considered Clasified as having been Written Off.

All Cat vehicles have been Written Off.

It depends on the level of cost to repair that makes the vehicle insurable again.

That might be open to policy by different insurers.

I think it would still require independent inspection by a recognised or appointed inspection authority.

It would be advisable to contact a broker/insurer for better information.

Erm....

A Cat N car, short for Category N car, is a term used by car insurance companies to describe ‘non-structural’ damage to a vehicle. ‘Non-structural’ means that a car’s structural frame or chassis have not been damaged in an accident.

However, the insurance provider has decided that it is not worth fixing the car and that getting a new one would be less expensive. But it doesn’t mean that Cat N vehicles cannot be returned to the road. In fact, many insurers do have them repaired and sell such cars for salvage.

Strangely enough I've done the cheap check using Instantcarcheck.co.uk and it comes back clear, no record of it having been written off and no category listed.

Is that enough to base not needing to inform any insurance companies on?

If the insurance company explicitly asks you a question you must honestly answer. You don't need to volunteer anything they haven't asked for. The insurance company should get all they need to know just from the number plate.

There is a Facebook group called Dodgy Cars that highlights cars that have been clocked/repaired/written off yet don't show up on various HPI checks.

He uses some facy checker that you can find on his page. It's quite amazing which so called reputable dealers seem to be totally unaware of the history of some cars they are selling.

Yes but you can't get a reg document for an A and B, and for a C,D or S have to ask for a new reg document.

Category N has none of that shit.
