A heads up for anyone who has a bike over 40 years old, I joined the VMCC a couple of years back when I inherited my Grandad's 1922 Sheffield Henderson - Blackburne (grasstrack racer/sprint bike)

It's now about £55 a year for membership but I just got an insurance quote through the club scheme (you can put modern bikes on too, as long as you also have a qualifying machine).

For my 1922 bike, my ZX6R and my 125 commuter it came in at £344 (fully comp, unlimited mileage including commuting, £50 excess, legal cover and UK/European breakdown cover), which too my mind is bloody good as all 3 for the same level of cover (separately) were coming in at £650.

"As a member of the VMCC, you have access to ‘VMCC Motorcycle Insurance’ an insurance scheme provided by Peter James Insurance (PJI) which is exclusive to the Club."

How much cheaper was insurance using the club scheme compared to a quote from Peter James Insurance without being part of the VMCC?

I haven't tried that, but the club scheme is supposed to be significantly cheaper than going direct with Peter James, you can as a non-member get a quote and they will also tell you the saving you get if you then join and get it through the club instead.

Basically the cheapest I managed to find on any comparison sites (just for the Ninja only) was £313, and that was with a mileage limit of 5K and total excess of £1k(!).

It's fairly comparable to others really. I'm paying similar for a highly modified enfield 500 bullet on a agreed value with all modifications declared along with a '97 VFR750 and a 350 bullet. All comp, and with euro recovery that works on vehicles over 25 years old. That's with bikesure.

One thing to watch with those classic hybrid policies is that they often don't accept or offer any NCB so if you stop insuring with them and go back to a normal policy, you have to start accruing NCB all over again. I lost 10 years NCB that way a few years back.

I did the 2010 Round Britain Rally on my 350 Bullet. 89 landmarks, 3 months, 9,500 miles.
