Slip road chaos.

Two-lane slip road onto a motorway and both lanes are always full in the rush hour. My inclination is to form a staggered formation down the slip road and merge onto the motorway accordingly, but everybody else just races down it happily over/undertaking or running side by side, making the motorway merge bloody dangerous. I can’t find the rules for this. The Highway Code talks about the moment of merging onto the motorway and how those on the motorway have priority, but are there rules for the two-lane on-slip?

Those situations have people joining everywhere during busy times. Have one onto the M4 near me. Yes - high likelihood of an accident. Shit road design. I just get onto the motorway safely as soon as possible then sit back and watch all the crazies zoom up the inside. Gotta be there 2 secs before everyone else!

The way slip roads are handled seems quite variable in the NE there seems to be more where a busy joining lane just carries on becoming the 'slow' lane this works so much better as there is no minor panic about possibly having to stop making it even harder to merge in.

I seriously don't know what the problem is with the transport agency or whoever 'dictates' road signs.

Any lane merging just needs lots of clear signs stating 'Merge in turn', like other parts of Europe. A few years of this and the majority of us will realise it's actually a good idea and start doing it automatically.

Just ridiculous the way everyone instantly gets into the merging lane and forms a queue miles long then glares at anyone daring to get within 100m of the end in the wrong lane to merge, it should happen like that automatically anyway!

The original scenario is compounded by the fact that the locals (Stevenage) will use the left hand lane to go right at roundabouts. This means if you’re behind on the approach to the roundabout intending to go left or straight on, your route is congested by vehicles which ought to be queuing in the right hand lane. Worse, if you’ve just entered the roundabout in the proper way planning to turn right you’ll find there’s a moving vehicle on your left when you want to cross the lane and exit.

The aforementioned slip road has a traffic-light-controlled roundabout at the top, so when it’s busy two full lanes are released at once and charge down the slip road two-by-two.
