I was actually looking for a totally unrelated bit of exhaust hardware but I noticed this:

Pretty much any length with whatever collars you want on the end. It occurs to me that it's almost always the last bit of the exhaust system on a bike when you get to the end can that has the really fiddly bends.

Beyond aesthetic considerations could one use this polylock stuff?

I hope so.. it was kinda my plan if I ever need to fabricate a new exhaust for one of my decrepit bikes.

Witht he exception that the end can is usually only attached at one point by a fairly flimst bracket or hanger and needs the support of a rigid connection to the rest of the system.

You'll find that you can also buy pre-fabricated bends and straight joints of any size, length and (within reason) range of diameters which often come with two clamps included.

Yup, something was nagging at my subconscious that I'd not even really seen it on the "eBay's most miserable" thread Smile

In my experience the exhaust guys are usually pretty good even on custom bends as long as you can describe it correctly. Weird S-shaped link pipes is where it gets tricky.

If you bend a piece of stiff fencing wire to the profile you want, they can usually follow that. Of course, you'd need to go in with it for that, not order online.

I wonder if exhaust fabrication is one of those things that has become accessible without us really noticing.

20 years ago it was entirely the reserve of professionals, with mandrel tube benders and TIG welders. Those were both big, expensive things that you wouldn't consider owning.

Nowadays, stainless pre-bent sections are a thing and you can get something described as a hobby TIG welder on ebay for about £100.

Seeing as it's getting harder to buy decent aftermarket exhaust systems for a lot of older bikes, we might be at the tipping point where it is worthwhile to fabricate your own stainless one in certain circumstances. I know I had to wait 2 years for a company to do another run of reproduction exhausts for my CB250RS, and when these ones rot I don't know if another run will ever happen.
