The return spring snapped on my left hand footrest several months ago. I've been riding the bike without a problem or even noticing. I mean gravity does a pretty good job of returning the footrest. The spring just helps.

I've got new springs for both side ordered, but not sure when they'll come and I need an MOT in the next week. The MOT manual states that you can fail if a footrest is "missing or insecure".

Do you reckon it's a fail if I get it tested before the parts arrive?

I haven't noticed them check it.
There tends to be certain things highlighted periodically.
I noticed this time they were big on petrol tank cap gasket not leaky or damaged.

There's a period of grace for fails.
I can't remember how many days you get to rectify and return for the part to be inspected FOC.

And some things may not be categorised as a fail but an advisory.

Advisories are usually things that may fail the next MOT test.

Book your MOT for the nearest estimate for your springs arriving.

As long as no-one pissed on your tester's cornflakes on the morning of the test, that's an advisory; nothing more.

I think its the same as car MOTs .
10 working days are allowed to fix your shit in time for a free retest.
As above, I'd say a missing spring does not make the footrest
'missing or insecure' just less convenient.

Could you position a figure 8 elastic band around it so that one loop is over the footrest and one loop is over the hanger? That way the elastic band will ping the footrest back to the flat position when lifted, and it'll meet any requirements for a test?

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

I've had this mentioned to me years ago on my GPZ500 by the tester, that the footrest wasn't springing down on it's own. But it wasn't marked down even as an advisory.

Just give it a go- Why not present the bike as it is and fix later and tell us how it went? If you're willing to waste the time for us.... Laughing

10 working days is the return window for the MOT.

Just be pleased it wasn’t your left foot handrest. Instant MOT fail.

It shouldn't be a fail - maybe an advisory at the worst. The insecure part refers to the actual mounting so as long as it's secured to the frame and the pin that it swivels on isn't going to fall out, you should be good. If you're worried then just wire it into the down position.

Interesting. I never knew it was hyphenated... always learning.

Anyway isn't a left foot handrest what the scrotes use to bust steering locks?

I'll report back. MOT is on Thursday. I doubt the spring will arrive in time. It's ordered, but no update on stock levels.

And honestly the spring should be the least of my worries. It's a 120,000 mile commuter that looks like I've stored it in a damp salt mine.

It passed with no advisories so that's that.

Only covered 3,500 miles since last year. In fact I've only done 6,800 miles since March 2020. Which given that I used to regularly top 15,000 per year shows how much less I'm travelling for work.
