Had a few messages which are most definitely dodgy fuckers.

Obviously I don't want some wrongun turning up at my house where I have two bikes.

Somebody's asked for the reg for a HPI check, is this safe? I know you can request keeper details with the DVLA so I'm a bit wary.

Not normally you can't... I think if you can prove a genuine need it might be possible somehow.

I think it’s more dodgy if some cunt is selling a bike and refusing to tell me the registration to do an HPI check, MOT history check, etc. Why you hiding it?

If it's on Ebay, then you can look at the person's feedback (do they have enough, and is it positive) and build up a picture of whether they're dodgy. Usually they aren't. I've always asked for the reg number for an HPI check. Always, the seller provided it.
As for Facebook and Gumtree, I wouldn't touch either with a bargepole.

Nothing wrong with asking for the reg, I always ask for the reg so I can do some checks as I almost got caught out buying a write off before and it's a good way to look up MOT history before I see the bike. If someone refused I'd think they are trying to hide something.

Feedback is pointless on ebay now, just bought something very expensive off some guy with 300+ feedback and i'm getting fobbed off


You could just hpi it yourself and say its ok in the listing, then it's up to them if they want to trust you

I bought something recently for the first time from a particular vendor and their rating to me was "A loyal & trusted customer".

I was actually curious about the various feedback when you mentioned it and also noticed that some responses were exactly the same from different suppliers. It is indeed pointless these days.

Years ago I used to browse a sellers feedback and stay away from those who had contested exchanges. Don't really care anymore.

Are you doing purely online only sale, or would a genuine buyer be having a look (either at yours or local meet up in a car park)? If they look at it in person, do you cover the plate until they agree to buy it?

Well, there was this thread here just a few weeks ago with some relevant comments: Why do sellers do this..

Personally, when I've sold bikes in the past I won't include the reg number in the advert or associated photos.
This way, people will have to put in some effort and also provides an audit trail of sorts, and you can judge from the way they've written their message as to whether they're a scammer or a genuinely interested buyer.

But eventually, someone will have to come to your home - whether they know the reg number or not, and whether they're a genuine buyer or not.

It's unfortunately just another part of the fun of selling privately...
