Hey folks, I'm in the process of rebuilding the top end of my NSR. Could you knowledgable people out there throw me any advice on running it in when done ? I.e max revs, how many kms, varying the revs etc.... Thumbs Up

when you first start the bike let it warm up for a few mins before riding off.

keep below 5,000-6,000 revs for the first 50 miles

then keep below 8,000 revs up till 100 miles, at that point check the toruqe of your cyclinder head bolts. and ride normaly

the trick with two-strokes is not to run them in too easy or too hard, to softly and you will vanshis the bore and soften the rings, too hard and the piston might seize.

Honda's recommended running in period is regarded as a bit soft, the above post is what a lot of people recommend, I will be doing it anyway when I get round to riding the NSR Smile

When I got my NSR rebuilt I was advised to do 300 miles under 5000rpm. It was a pain in the @rse but I done it.

As a rule, NS / NSR lumps need to do around 150 - 200 miles once rebuilt @ 5500 rpm and not over 6500 rpm, don't want to have to rebuild it after 400 miles.

A couple of heat cycles once its all together. The first couple of times a piston is heated the expansion is relatively large. Getting a couple of heat cycles done at idle(ish) makes sure these expansions don't cause too much hassle. I normally do them while bleeding the oil tank.

Some people say to run it on premix, nut this leans out the jetting.

500km at half max revs, then every 100km take it up by 1000rpm.

No holding a steady revs and no labouring the engine. You can take it right up through the rev range, just don't hold it there or do it too often.

both: cagiva gezzer and Ian (GPX) methods

are way too soft for runing a two-stroke in, and performance may suffer. my stated method is what the old boys always say too me and l,ll rather go with guys who have had over 30 years of experance with two strokes than what honda, yamaha etc say any day.

Arrow do not run the bike on premix, or any extra oil

Arrow work the bike in every gear up to the 50 and 100 mile marks, do not sit at a steady speed work the engine within the allowed revs.

Yamaha / Honda etc ! I'd say that they would know better due to the fact that they developed the engine in the 1st place or is R&D redundent now ?

R&D makes sure learners who thrashing there bikes from cold, or those who don’t allow them to warm up make it out of the warrantee by telling them to run them in like pusses. All they think about is money not how the bike performs or what people want or they would be fitting stainless steel brake lines and stainless nuts/bolts and crash bungs as standard.

Kawasaki R&D says that l should run my KR1S on semi-synfetic oil, and most of us know you would have to be a right twat to run a performance 250cc two-stroke on that crap.

Manufacturers generally give overkill run in recommendations to cover their backs.

Look what racers do, they put it together and thrash it round the isle of mann. If they get more than half way round then the engine will do just fine. no running in, no premix just a damn good thrashing.

Just do 100 miles out of the powerband (gradually increasing towards the powerband as you get closer to 100 miles) thenincrease towards redline over the next 100.

Run on premix initially as the system won't have much oil in it. after the first tank full or so theres no need to use it again.

When you first start it up, a little premix in the cylinder will help, as will lubing all parts with 2 stroke oil during assembley

Cheers for the advice guys, I'll bear it in mind. For some reason I thought the run in period was much longer, but it seems I should be able to do it with a weeks gentle commute to work.... Thumbs Up
