I was thinking back to the first article I read on this:

Over 10 years ago the Post Office officially knew they had problems from their own investigators Shocked

Crucially the Horizon system was known to have flaws from Day One. This is the way with large IT projects and to assume otherwise would be a definition of insanity.

What I'm struggling to figure out is the motivation to shift the blame to sub-postmasters (and mistresses) - to lie - and keep the charade going for so long Thinking

It smells a bit like the hole-in-the-wall PIN number scandal.

I would assume that it's because the alternative is if they'd fessed up originally that 'yeah the system is fucked and often doesn't balance at the end of the day; don't worry about it', they would perceive that they'd be giving carte blanche to any genuinely crooked sub-postmasters to put their hand in the till whenever they felt like it?

I'm intrigued by the media who constantly refer to 'Japanese Company Fujitsu' but initially it was all down to UK cock-up merchants ICL or specifically their subsid ICL Pathway - that was eventually absorbed by Fujitsu..

Neither is blameless it seems although the Jap owners were a long way away.

It’s odd that the government are still concerned they might be letting some imagined real crims off, so all the sub-postmasters and sub-mistresses will have to sign a ‘declaration of innocence’. It still smacks of, “I suppose we’ll just have to believe you.” Shameful.

If it was me I think I’d want total capitulation, an apology and the the managers and politicians of the time made answerable, not some grudging ‘pardon.’ Still, they’ve waited too long to delay the compensation.
