Along with the aforementioned list from MCN I'd hazard some surfaces styles and plastics are more hospitable than others.
For example, I tend to use polycarbonates for shed windows etc. over glass (glass cutting being an old skool trade slowly disappearing) but I buy the special "anti-algae" stuff that has magic* in it.
