Kawasaki kmx 125 1993

Hi everyone, I've got the opportunity to get a kawasaki kmx 125 that's in a decent condition for around £1400. However it's had porting and a re bore done, while the bike will run it only starts with the use of easy start and doesn't like to idle at a low rpm. I know it has a the original exaust from the restricted model could this be causing problems. It has a aftermarket carb for a 140cc pit bike not sure on what size it is. Any recommendations on if it's worth the money and how mutch work people recon it will need, I don't know what it's been rebored or ported too either. Any suggestions on what jets to put in the carb and if the exhaust is causing problems ?

Would it be either to buy a new cylinder head and take it back to the original spec and carb ?

First of all google what an original carb costs, as the running issues are almost certainly because some chump threw a fakeuni or Molkt carburettor on there. Whenever anyone says 'It just had a rebore and porting M8' then don't believe them. It could be a huge money pit. If you can get it for not a lot of money and find an original carb for not a lot of money you could then sell it on as a project, but it sounds like someone isn't throwing straight dice to me. It's an old two stroke bodged together by someone who is attempting to talk the talk but actually has no clue.

Got to agree with WD. £1400 seems excessive especially for something with issues. Go elswhere.

What you have described does not sound like it's in 'decent condition' to me, that said I doubt you'll find an example of such a bike that hasn't been 'improved' by a veritable legion of impecunious and clueless teenagers by now. The fact that it's wearing a Chinese pit bike carb hardly inspires confidence as to the quality of any other work carried out on it.

Imagine the worst case scenario - expensive new carb (there's one on eBay for £85 that may or may not work), the engine will almost certainly be fucked necessitating a full rebuild, plus anything else you might discover on such a cared for and cosseted 'classic' - then walk away, and congratulate yourself on having dodged a bullet.

You’d get more enjoyment and less stress drawing the £1400 out of the bank and setting it on fire.

An old 2t trial bike with homebrew porting (they say) and a carb totally unsuited for the application - what could possibly go wrong?
