Got a mate with a 2013 Vespa.

Been sat for 2 years and hasn't budged an inch.

He wants to get it back on the road but it won't start.

He's put a new battery in it and we've tried jump starting it, no good.

Ignition and lights come on and you can hear what I assume is the fuel pump priming, but when you hit the start button - nothing.

20 amp fuse next to the battery is fine.

Haven't delved any deeper than that but anyone know anything obvious we should check before trailering it to a mechanic?

Help/advice will be greatly appreciated.

Have you tried checking if there is fuel in the tank? A lit match should give you enough illumination to see.

This could go on ad nauseum but anyway
You do realise you have to pull the back brake lever in while starting and
if not and/or the side stand is down you'll get nowt?.

Not my bike.

Only had a very brief look at it in the dark.

Kinda wanted to get it sorted though as I've offered to trailer it if can't get it going himself/ourselves.

He did say the rear brake has to be pulled in which he was doing. I didn't see a side stand but it was up on the centre stand and I asked if it would start on the centre stand and he said yes.

Do these have a side stand? Could be an iffy switch...

If it starts on the centrestand it's the f'in sidestand switch. It's not rocket science.

That would also have been important information to include in the original post.

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

I interpreted it to mean that "yes, it is usually possible to start it while on the centrestand as it has no interlock" as opposed to "it runs on the centrestand now".

Maybe?

Details please... '2013 Vespa' covers a multitude of sins. For example, if it's a GTS or some such it would have left the factory with a side stand, so in that case it's possible that the stand wiring/switch might still be there.

Good point!

No idea (not really my cup of tea).

Had to ask.

Vespa Primavera 125 3V.

No side stand apparently.

Generic stuff that I'd do as I have nothing vespa specific to offer...

Quick scan over to make sure no wiring is hanging loose or been chopped up (aftermarket accessories etc.)

Then.

Bypass starter solenoid to check the starter works and engine turns, it may start doing this.

Then.

Verify trigger voltage for the starter solenoid, and check operation if voltage is present, further investigation up to the button if not, including interlocks (brake switch etc).

You say you've tried jump starting - to verify terminology, jump starting is attaching an external voltage source (battery, another vehicle) - is this what you tried?

I'm happy to continue, but you have to consider at what point it becomes far less hassle to wash your hands of it and hook up the trailer...
