1998 YZF600 Tail Light Issue

Hi folks. Wonder if anyone can help please.

I'm in the process of temporarily putting a tatty '98 YZF600 Thundercat back on the road; it's been off the road for five years; it just needs to be road viable for a few months whilst I basically test the engine before transplanting the engine into another bike. However, one problem is preventing me from getting it road legal and it's the tail light.

The brake lights for front and rear brakes work fine. The taillight also works when the ignition is in park, and the front parking light comes on. But, when the ignition is on, I get headlight and no taillight. Obviously it's not the bulb and it can't be a wiring issue or the tail light wouldn't work when in park. Can't see any blown fuses either. I've also tried it with just sidelights and ignition, and there's still just the front sidellight and no rear taillight (except when in parking position).

Does anyone have any suggestions or experience with this? Thanks!

I would be looking at the wiring between the light switch and where it meets the wires for the tail light. The ignition has a different connection to the wiring for the tail light than the light switch.
