Microsoft has Windows Defender, its in-house alternative to CrowdStrike, but because of the 2009 agreement made to avoid a European competition investigation, had allowed multiple security providers to install software at the kernel level.

So, Microsoft pushed down a road they hadn’t expected to have to go down? EU to blame.

You're missing the point. Microsoft could still have prevented this even with the EU rules in place. They are just shifting blame.

Reputationally it’s Crowdstrike who are taking the hit.

I blame Microsoft. It is not EU fault Microsoft has bad kernel access model.

and some other stuff

Well, let's not forget that this is not the first time Kurtz has screwed up and caused a global issue.

Quote:
CrowdStrike's CEO oversaw very similar McAfee meltdown

In 2010, PCs around the world crashed after antivirus vendor McAfee pushed a bad update that left PCs in an endless reboot cycle.

At the time, McAfee's chief technology officer was George Kurtz – who now serves as CEO of CrowdStrike.

Kurtz therefore has the possibly unique and almost-certainly-unwanted distinction of having presided over two major global outage events caused by bad software updates.

Mcafee is bad enough when it's functioning as designed. I'd actually go so far as to say it fulfills most of the things you'd need to be defined as a virus.

It could have killed my brothers mother in law. She accidentally installed it on one of those drive-by download things, you know the large letters "download my file now with free mcafee protection" then smaller letters "download my file without protection from the latest internet security threats". Being an old lady, she wanted to be protected from security threats so clicked the big download button.

It installed then promptly firewalled her device off her insulin pump and dynamic glucose meter. Took my brother three hours downloading another app to remove it then re-calibrating her system and stabilising her blood sugar.

Was that actual McAfee or was that some malware masquerading as such? The beauty of Crowdstrike is that it doesn't absorb resources in the way other AV solutions do such as McAfee, Symantec etc. which is probably why it was an industry standard at least until last Friday.
