Public services have to be paid for somehow. What would you prefer to be taxed to be pay for your NHS treatment in your doterage?

Reading through this thread again I cannot express how angry this shite form Nobby has made me.

I spent 40 years working, paying taxes, NI and everything else in very large amounts only to have some little asshole tell me im indebted to him and his ilk for my old age.

If the government, any government did what pivate companies had to do and ring fence pension contributions perhaps us old farts wouldn't be quite such a problem.

I've paid my fucking bit for my old age Nobby. Fuck you and your nasty little digs at OAP's.

I feel the same, I’ve done all that society urges you to do; study, work hard in a decent job (private sector pharma R&D, beneficially impacting other people’s lives), pay the bills and stand on your own two feet. You can say it was a ponzi scheme but I've paid in and taken nothing out, so if, at 62 now, I need to make a small withdrawal on that (actually not yet, and I’m still working) I’ve earned it.

On top of that Dad worked hard all his life mostly on factory floors doing shifts, Mum raised three kids, they kept us out of poverty and all three of us got what you might call middle class jobs (but you’re always working class). Dad died suddenly and then Mum’s Alzheimer’s diagnosis meant we had to sell the house to pay for her care, so that’s two generations totalling a large net contribution.

Don’t tell me I should feel ashamed should I latterly call on the government for support and respect.

It’s not like I just crossed The Channel saying, “Hell yeah, I want some of that good, free stuff!”

Give it up, Nobby, nobody believes you.

24 ministerial depts, 20 non-ministerial depts, 428 agencies, 111 "High Profile" bodies, 19 public corporations and, lest we forget, 3 devolved administrations all suckling from the public teat Shocked
(source)

Only those of faith believe all of that is necessary.

Let the departments employ as many as they need rather than introducing artificial limits on headcount, which results in having to pay private sector to fill in the gaps at exorbatant rates and then it would change.

Actually the private sector increasingly do more with less headcount, and while that’s not great for the staff it does improve efficiency. You’re telling us the public sector follow the old ways and if the bloated headcount still can’t cope they employ the private sector. As a taxpayer I…

Thank goodness there are unions to represent the workers so they aren't exploited then.

So, what would you prefer? The work needs doing regardless. Either civil servants at a given rate taking into account the employers contribution for NI and pension or private sector at, if you are lucky, 3 times the amount?

Or improve efficiency as removing wasteful layers of middle management could pay for stuff to be done in house?
