So...

My new bike (Forza 750) has a chain.

For the last 40+ years all my bikes have been shaft drive.

I'm a lazy bugger, so want to have to do the minimum amount of faffery I can and came across Scottoilers while browsing t'internet the other night.

I remember them from the 80's but never got a feel for whether they were any good or not.

Does BCF recommend them (or any alternative)?

Thanks

It will make your chain last for 10 times what it would with oiling at the end of a ride.

it will also spray oil over the back end of your bike so if it's a garage queen you will hate it.

Setting it up can be an arse and occasionally you have to adjust it because drip rate will be dependant on outside temp but it's not that bad.

Then you just have to refill the thing every couple of weeks/ month (depending on mileage/drip rate selected)

Expect it to drip onto your drive way, from both the front sproket end when you park up and from the dispenser if you have it running whilst on the side stand.

To get round that I normally just put bits of card in the garage for parked up and the same if I'm planning on having it running it without riding it under the dispenser.

I remember them being vacuum powered off the carbs but I presume they are electronic now.

The fancy ones are - the basic one is still vacuum driven. Mine doesn't leak on the drive or in the garage, nor is the back of the bike coated in clart.

Chain is still original @ 15k miles and showing little signs of wear.

If used correctly they almost turn chains into shafts regards longevity.

How long would a chain normally last?

I use the vacuum Scottoilers on my two CBF1000s. The best chain mileage I got out of the older CBF was 48,964 miles… which might have been pushing it a bit. I did replace the front sprocket during that time. It was starting to hook.

I was a bit generous with the flow on my old CBF and the rear wheel and surrounding area was a bit of an oily mess, but the bike only got washed a couple of times a year and it keeps the salt at bay. I have the touring reservoir on the old bike and generally got about 4k miles between refills.

I think I’ve nailed the flow rate on the newer bike. Much less mess, but the chain is still nice and clean and lubed. I’ll probably turn up the drip rate for winter.

Chain oilers aren’t for everyone, but I love ‘em. Hardly ever have to adjust the chain and any mess can be wiped away with a cloth and WD40 before washing the bike.

Edit: I did seriously consider the Forza 750 before I picked up my newer CBF1000, but they were just slightly out of my price range. I still intend to try a test ride at some point.

Previous bike had one, because when I bought it from the dealer I took a vacuum scottoiler off the shelf and said fit it for me when youre doing the pre delivery inspection.

Absolutely brilliant bit of kit. Had the bike about 4 years and the original chain was still like new. Did get a fair bit of oil fling on the rear wheel but oh well dont really care, easy enough to clean. Only real faff was having to find somewhere to buy oil for it when youre off on a tour a few thousand miles from home and realise you forgot to pack the oil. Rolling Eyes

Cant say I ever noticed it dripping on my drive or anything.

Current bike doesnt have one because they look like an utter pain in the ass to fit and set up correctly yourself (the vacuum ones anyway) and Im too tight to pay someone to fit it for me.
