Hi,
My friends son has turned up with a 2005 Er5 he has been given, stood for a few years, that will only run when the starter is on and dies when its off.
First question is please, there is no oil or coolant/ temp light. bulbs are okay and the switches have a good ground/continuity. would this cause the engine not to carry on running?
A lot of the starting safety wires have been bypassed, clutch, side stand.
I am not sure what they have actually done since getting the bike, they said it ran fine but lumpy with old fuel in it (jumping it with a car battery) they removed the heated hand grips, put a new battery on it and pressure washed it! I have gone thru the connections and cleaned and dried them, I dont have a wiring diagram for this model, but it looks like the coolant light wire brown/white isn't going to the ignitor just to the yellow red kill switch, I cant see any other lose wire that should connect to the temp light,
any ideas please,

The oil warning light wouldn't stop it running but is perhaps indicating some other electrical problem.
I'd have a look at the wire leading from the main fuse first off. Usually a fat white one. It's located on the starter solenoid and attaches to the 30A main fuse holder. They are very prone to corrosion.
Is the neutral light working? ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. That's when you find out everything you want to know.”
