I've just purchased a used but only 4 times hyundai hym51spe to replace my trusty sovereign, sovvy worked great once started with a drill because the pull start died and it took a good 10 pulls to start the thing... anyway..

146cc sovvy self drive pulls itself for the most part up the steepest part of my garden yet the 196cc hyundai barely pulls itself along on flat ground, I made the mistake of taking it to the bottom of the garden and trying to mow up just to test it and basically had to push the entire weight up the hill.

Anyone else have one of these to confirm if they're just shit for self propelling? If they are then she's gonna have to be resold, reason for buying a bigger engined mower was to make life a bit easier

I have a hym460spe (same, but smaller) and it pulls itself along absolutely fine across my garden. If I try and hold it back it'll grip and wheel-spin.

Perhaps your drive belt is slipping? Or is the speed controller stuck on snail?

Worryingly it barely moves on flat ground too

For some reason "self-propelled" conjured up images of lawnmower racing Smile The actuality:

Anyhoo, a motor that size should absolutely fly along. I mean, arguably it looks to be styled as a racing mower Laughing

If the engine sounds to be running sound and the blade's turning at a reasonable speed I'd be looking at the clutch.

Update:

After tightening the drive belt upping the revs it still didn't work, until I found the cable for the self drive lever was slacker than smilers subframe.

Now it drags me up the garden with ease

I wonder if the "only 4 times" people never set the thing up correctly in the first place Thinking Hope you snagged yourself a bargain!

It almost certainly wasn't set up right, belt was slacker than smilers subframe and self drive cable was so slack even bodyguard wouldn't use it as a brake cable, mowed the lawn 3 times flawlessly with it since, 3d printed a beer holder for it now it's perfect.

£100 for a basically new £465 mower was a steal!

Check the self-drive cable. If it’s too slack, it won’t engage properly. Mine was so loose it was basically doing nothing. Once I sorted that out, it started dragging itself up inclines without an issue.
If you’re still having trouble, maybe hit up a Hyundai Engine Specialist. They might know if there’s a bigger problem. Honestly, small fixes made a world of difference for me, so hopefully, it’s just that.
