Got a new company vehicle, citroen dispatch van. It's riddled with pester features*. The latest of which is it wants me to install a "performance update".

Given that everything seems to be working fine, my feeling is that no good can come of this, it's like installing a firmware update on a graphics card that's working and stable. Whatever it's wanting to fuck with is currently working and might not do so afterwards.

It also occurrs to me that this may be the new version of emissions regs defeat software, so they come out of the shop running lean as hell to reduce the emissions then update them after a few thousand miles onto a proper fueling map.

Does anyone know what they are up to? I can happily ignore it ad-infinitum if necessary.

* start-stop, auto-swerve, auto-brake, speed limit pester, auto headlights and it can't cope with me not having paired a mobile device to it. Got most of the driver interfrence features disabled now by simply putting a sticker over the forward looking camera, it just goes into an error mode after a couple of miles and tells you those features aren't working. FM Radio works so it's not all bad.

It's traditional with Open Source software to offer a "change log" or patch notes for each update. Commercial software sometimes follows that lead. If you have anything like "this will update to version 1.23(10/11/24)" it'd be worth a Google search.

You could also try contacting Stellantis and blag your IT security guy won't let you install any updates without patch notes.

Could install and not worry, could ignore and not worry.

All depends. I update often, but not bleeding edge. Same would go for my car, firewall or pc... I'm always a revision out unless it's absolutely required.

Tesla over the air updates and coming back to it with a 'lol I did it anyway, enjoy your moved button' would anger me, but I imagine the performance update is just a minor adjustment to fueling or start/stop.

Would I worry, no I wouldn't. It's not my vehicle tho.

my Tesla seems to get an update every other week and if I don't update then shit like Netflix stops working and it's annoying so I let it update overnight when I sleep.

You're thinking of it as a van. It thinks it's a computer with wheels. Computers do updates.

Installing the update is highly unlikely to cause problems, or do anything noticeable whatsoever. If people notice, they might call customer service, and no company wants that.

It's also quite possible the update has nothing to do with the engine. Your van will have multiple computers on board, all doing different things. An update could be as small as reducing the power to the remote central locking receiver after 24 hours of inactivity to conserve battery life.

Regardless, the update will get applied at the next service. So you can do it now, or wait a bit longer while they do it then. Dealership mechanics always seem to leave the updates until the end of the service and do them separately, so you can pay £100/hour for someone else to watch a status bar fill up.
