What!? Your assertions are contradictory, mate. Are you saying the OEM knew they were assembling shitty electrical connections on their motorcycles and elected to circumvent their substandard design/workmanship with a band-aid?
Kawasaki? Unbelievable.

Yes, that's pretty much what I'm saying.
Earth connections, by their very nature, are a weak spot and can be problematic. Kawasaki and other responsible manufacturers throughout the automotive industry recognise this and take steps to alleviate/eliminate such problems.
Hardly a sub-standard design or a sticking-plaster bodge.

Hmm. It seems he's right. Bizarrely a few items on the instrument cluster have a seperate earth that only uses the frame.

I know that this is the US spec diagram and probably the wrong year anyway but the headlight relay (lhs bottom) isn't isolated by the main fuse and is has a seperate fuse. loking at your fuse box I would assume its the 10 amp one next to your main fuse (if it is infact the same).

Interesting. It does look like a bit of an afterthought with its bullet connector. I got a reading of 8mA. From the negative battery terminal via the bullet connector it goes down to the bottom of the battery box and joins a fairly chunky part of the loom.

Tomorrow I’ll remove the seat/tail unit and have a look at the two connectors I bypassed after removing the alarm years ago.

Good thought but there’s no headlight relay on this single-headlight ‘G2’ model.

The 10A mini-fuse holder on the right of the picture below is/was part of the alarm installation. I’ll look at that tomorrow.

The easiest way to determine current through a fused circuit is to simply remove the fuse and touch your ammeter probes to each of the terminals inside the fuse holder.

The fuse holder which was part of the old alarm installation has 9mA going through it, like every circuit tested so far.

So with that fuse out, what happens when you test at the battery lead? Im betting that the drain will have dissapeared.

If it has and that fuse literally only did the alarm, I'd be tempted to just leave the fuse out.

It would make sense and does align with that fuse being on separate wiring from the main fuse.

Thanks Nobby. Without that fuse the current at the battery lead drops to 1mA. I had assumed the fuse needs to stay in place to avoid immobilisation, although without it the starter will still turn the engine. It won’t fire up but that could be because it always takes a few goes after a lay-up, and I’ve got the tank off.

Edit: bottle/auxiliary tank hung from the bars, I can feel the fuel pump pulsing and the bike eventually starts, indicators work, all good.

Cheers!
