Severance (TV Series, 2022)

Very slow build up but slightly - can't quite put your finger on it - odd from the start. It reminds me a lot of Control (Video Game, 2019). And both may be inspired by S.C.P. Thinking

Anyhoo, one of those stories that only need to ask one simple question and then see what happens.

Good show. Season 2 trailer was released a few days ago.

The Manhattan Alien Abduction

Carol is a documentary film maker married to a UFO investigator. Half way through the second episode: "...I started to believe my husband had lost his objectivity."

Worth watching just for that line alone Laughing

It seems Netflix is chasing after that valuable daytime TV documentary money Neutral

I gave up on it after 15 minutes (ditto the other one), full of disconnected waffling shit.

I almost did the same but I wanted to hang on and see if they'd get beyond the assumption that eye-witness testimony was valuable or maybe chance their arm with some critical thinking.

The X-Ray of the "mind probe" for example. The very first thing you'd do is ask "if I wanted to recreate this image how could I do it without self-lobotomising?"

It reminded me of a night club were I installed CCTV many moons ago. The building was an old seamans' mission being refurbed and the builders swore blind the place was haunted. Apparently ghosts are allergic to Infra-Red light 'cos as soon as the system was switched on all ghost sightings stopped! Laughing

Watching it now.

Fuck.

Just when you think things might calm down... BAM! fate turns the characters in different directions.

This series is Strong saying "acting? ACTING?! I'll fucking show you acting."

Now on the second season, starting to get some Lock Stock / Snatch / Guy Ritchie vibes - not a complaint - and if telepathy were a thing Strong's character would be screaming "What the actual fuck..." every other scene Laughing

Was curious as I had seen Kiera Knightley interviewed all over the place so I binged Black Doves due to the atrocious weather, and actually enjoyed it. Not as good as Temple but still lots of lovely recognisable London scenery. Wub

I don't usually bother with things where Sarah Lancashire is just doing another reiteration of Gritty Northern Bird, but this time she was visually and verbally stunning.

Then, seeing as how I was on Netflix and the weather was still filthy, I watched a short miniseries with Ted Danson called A Man on the Inside about a widower who takes on a spying role for a detective agency and moves himself into a fancy old folks place.

It was no better than it sounds and Ted Danson at 76 should not look that fanciable*. I heard somewhere that he wears a syrup and I spent half the programme trying to figure out where it fits on his head.

*but then I got quite moist over most of the men in Grace and Frankie as well Laughing

Just tucked into the first episode. Very English bants. "Well.. fings 'ave changed 'ere since you've been away." How so? "Well they've got much fucking worse, ain't they?" Smile

Yellowstone (Netflix; 2018–2024) - 8/10

A friend of mine recommended me this TV show and I must say, it's not bad at all. It's been awhile since I saw Kevin Costner in anything good. The rest of the cast is also well picked and the theme and story so far is very captivating. Imagine cowboy Sopranos.

I quite like it too: more 'cowboy Succession' though, I think

Just finished watching. TBH I enjoyed this just as much as Temple. I think I was only just a little ahead of the characters in realising what was going on.

Kleo (2022; Netflix) - 8/10

Kleo is a spy killer in GDR, sent to prison by her own people. Then the Berlin Wall goes down, she's set free (amnesty), now trying to figure out who betrayed her and to get revenge.

It's an unusual TV series, full of action, violence, plot twists, with some comedy bits as well. The cast is very well picked, I must say.

If you had to pick just one box set to watch what would it be?

I don't usually watch tv for anything other than Motorcycle racing and Sky Sports news.

There seems so many box sets to choose from, too many

I like UK stuff.

I would say Bodyguard on NETFLIX isn't too bad a place to start.
Action thriller, UK drama. Fairly recent.

Luther is always worth a watch, too.

A bit more niche: The Gentlemen
(Guy Ritchie)

I also enjoyed The Sinner, as its Bill Pullman who is so low key as to be practically British Laughing

Arcane

Just finished season 2 and I have no clue what I was watching. Probably better to say I experienced a piece of art.

Will probably go down as the benchmark for style in animation.

Got bored halfway through season 2. Season 1 was incredible though.

Fair enough, I hung in there for the spectacle.

Netflix then recommended me Tokyo Override. Not quite sure what to make of it.

It's sorta your typical teen-drama: odd girl out at high school, has a talent for hacking, falls in with a gang of smugglers who're in to child trafficking and organ legging... you know, as ya do. It does have a few redeeming qualities though.

The motorcycles the gang ride have been faithfully and I mean really faithfully reproduced. The animators know their stuff even if the script writers don't really know how shock pre-load works. The futuristic vision of Tokyo is all automated EVs so it does make sense to use old-skool ICE bikes to go "off-grid". We even see this today with all the driver aids on cars you can thankfully avoid with a bike.

The premise of the city is also interesting. "Oh no, we're not tracking your every move, we're optimising your journey!" Sleep walk into Totalitarianism through convenience, the whole "Fully Automated Luxury Communism" realised as anime.

There are some obvious flaws. In a city of 99.99% EVs where the heck do you get petrol from? Maybe the authorities can't track the motorcycles but I think they could manage piecing together a supply chain. And the writing. On the one hand, if you watched the first episode, you might mistakenly let your 10 year old watch this... but then in a later episode you have drug turf war massacre scene Shocked
