No idea why I bought a Geiger counter but I was very disappointed it didn't go berserk with the lump of granite my dad gave me when I left home. Still, I have been toting it around for ~35 years, I expect all the Radon's gone by now.

Gonna try the smoke detectors though Thumbs Up

Check to see whether it's sensitive to alpha radiation before you do. A lot of Geiger counters aren't.

A bit of advice and I apologise if I'm preaching to the choir here. You'll either have to unsolder the module or the screening can to expose the actual source otherwise you won't pick anything up at all. Alpha particles are helium nuclei and are stopped easily (sheet of paper, human skin, more than about 5cm distance...) and as such don't present much of a threat as long as you don't go digging around in the holder to get the material out (Seriously, don't do that). Use forceps to handle the button if you remove it and wear gloves. Put the screen back on or put it in a tin when you're done and you'll be fine.

I got about 30,000 counts per minute from mine Smile

Wheel slave cylinder for the car. Unfortunately dust seal has a split in it. I've message e-Bay vendor, but has yet to get back to me. I have MOT re-test relatively soon so if time becomes too close i'll have to just use seal from the old cylinder. I'll give him a bit of time, after all I need to put a new section of line to the flexi after the fixing to the cylinder rounded, and then the line twisted when I did get it free.

I was considering just re-building or freeing up old cylinder anyway but the bore is just far too rusty and beyond use.

Are we guessing why you are collecting radioactive materials or why you'd be buying a compass that is most likely lathered with radium so that it can be used in the dark?
There was an interesting programme on the telly a while back, about the women that worked in the factories during the war, one of the things covered was about those that painted the radium on compasses and watch dials.

That's the reason. I wanted a gamma (and beta) source as well. The radium paint is behind glass but you can bet I'll be very careful with the compass. I suspect it'll be pretty lively and it'll be stored out of the house that's for certain. I may even make a lead box for it.

The sheer lack of understanding and the wilful exposure of the radium girls is horrendous. There was a landfill near Dalgety bay in Fife that eroded out a load of radium painted materials from WW2 aircraft onto the shoreline that's only just recently been properly cleaned up.

I'm planning to build a Wilson cloud chamber as well. That lets you see tracks of the different types of radiation as they pass through an isopropanol vapour. This is a lifelong interest of mine. I have a decent understanding of the processes and an even better understanding of the potential risks and safe handling.

The Geiger counter is going to be mostly used to test rocks and minerals throughout Scotland.

Got full refund for wheel cylinder and a 'don't bother sending it back', so i'll just fit one of the old dust seal from old cylinder and then fit the thing on the axle. Happy days. Always worth complaining.

An Uber home (£37)
Rolling Eyes

Wiped myself out getting to the monthly Exec Committee meeting by 9am without first having breakfast or even swilling down a coffee before I left the house.

Managed to blag an instant coffee before the meeting but followed that up 3 hrs later at lunchtime with two steak bakes which repeated on me all afternoon Rolling Eyes

So I had a little snooze for half an hour on the way home and managed to perk up a bit in the late afternoon/early evening to catch up on my emails before knocking off time.

Bought some new parrot food for my African Grey, Holly Crackers ... 12.5kg for £35 delivered, so £2.80 per kg.

Pets At Home was charging around £50 for 10kg of their stuff so £5 per kg (which looks the exact same as the new stuff) ... they are now stocking the new stuff I've just bought, but for £40 so £3.20 per kg ... bye bye P.A.H.

A "proper" Raspberry Pico 2 W to replace the Chinese knock-off. The genuine WiFi is much easier to get on with and serving up basic web pages trivial.

I'd have to say the setup is well thought out. In "boot select" mode the Pico looks like a USB memory stick and you just drag and drop an operating system image file, it gobbles it up and reboots as a USB serial device ready for programming. MicroPython is the ez-mode and you can either send the code down the serial for interactive running or dump a "main.py" file on the Pico and it'll autorun on power up.

Fun as Picos and Arduinos are to tinker with it's all a bit futile without a genuine task. I therefore have an idea to leverage the Pico's USB host capability to turn a cheap PC numberpad along with a simple display and emulate an old-skool accounting calculator:

The plan is: USB keypad => Raspberry Pico => cheap display => (something, something) => custom desktop calculator.

The old calculators used to run bright vacuum florescent displays. The closest equivalent these days would be blue or white OLED screens. I haven't found an off-the-shelf wide display anything like the pictured Sharp has so I'm going to chain 3 or 4 small OLED displays together to get the same effect.

They're 5 for £4.35 on AliExpress Smile

Basically following the same principle as faking Nixie Tubes:

Thats an insane price for the displays, but even so a lot of bother when you can still buy a Sharp print calculator Thinking
Cheaper than fettling motorbikes I guess.

Just signed up for my separation/early retirement package from work.
One of the options included the very impressively discounted fleet vehicle purchase of the car I picked up on Tuesday.

Which was nice.

I honestly cannot see a reason to buy a manual foot pump when you can buy a battery operated one as cheaply.

For some reason I didn't even think about a battery one.

A fried egg and bacon sarnie on white bread.
No sauce just slightly runny egg yolk so it goes nice and gooshy on the bacon.
I haven't had one for probably five years.
