Bit of a bugger if you need to put in some fuel, I expect.

All fine now but fuck me. How can you market a vehicle that can have an electronic glitch that leaves the engine running with the fucking key out? Clearly the key switch isn't actually a switch, it's a suggestion input.

Checked on the way home tonight and key off does kill the engine now.

That sounds like the kind of safety issue where I would get on to whoever services the van.
The key not being a switch is fairly normal now, because some of the computers need to shut down somewhat gracefully. It should however certainly kill the high pressure fuel pump very quickly.

Not so much "gears ground" but bemused.

Yesterday I espied a guy in a Mercedes on his tod wearing a face mask Thinking No TFL sticker or other evidence of being a taxi, car was a bit too grubby if anything.

Maybe the body in the boot was kicking off a bit.

Wasting an entire afternoon with the Virgin Media chat window. Calling their 150 number just takes you to automated payments: "your outstanding balance is... zero pounds. Please enter your card details now."

I think it's taken me 6 or 7 iterations of the Chatbot and/or Indonesian call centre slaves to find anyone the least be cooperative but it looks like I might manage to haggle them down to the same price as the previous 18 months, give or take a couple of quid.

An afternoon's work or see my bill double Shocked

<addendum> haggled 'em down to £4 cheaper per month than the last contract for the exact same services Smile

Today I am mostly emailing 165 people. Mad
One.At.A.Time.
Brick Wall

Perhaps I could have used mail-merge (or indeed AI) to do it but it would take me longer to work out HOW to do it than to actually do it.

Luckily it is the same message/attachment so I only have to do minor faffing and then press send on each one, and now I am "in the swing of it". (I am already up to #50, anyway)

Sooner or later some of them will read it, freak out and I will have to deal with the fall-out.
Hopefully not until tomorrow/in dribs and drabs over the next few weeks.

One hopes one will not have to email the other 200-ish people.

If nothing else it will be an enriching exercise.
There may also be some schadenfreude ... Thinking

That's definitely a mail merge operation. Essentially you need a template email and a spread sheet with the addresses, names and whatever else needs to changes.

Do you use Microsoft Office?

I do use Office but not 365 in any effective way, I'm still in old skool mode.

I used to be the mailmerge champ in pre-Windows days so its not that I can't use it - I had just started down the road of emailing, and there were a fair few that needed little extra additions ("the personal touch") in the message as I was sending them.

Anyway, it's all done now, nose to the grindstone an' all that Laughing

Lot of bikes getting nicked in my area. Typical pattern:

* steal bike
* fuck it up (break steering lock)
* push it to a quiet spot
* fuck it up some more (attempt to hotwire it like in the movies)
* give up
* dump it in the river

Bring back the pillory on the village green Evil or Very Mad

Sounds familiar. See if they graduate to the next stage which cuts out all that tricky pushing about and hotwiring nonsense like they did in Edinburgh.
* Hang about at a quiet traffic light controlled junction or get your mates on E-bikes to block the road.
* Wait for a bike to stop.
* Run out and push the rider off.
* Threaten with knife/hammer.
* Take bike, complete with keys.
* Ride it about the place for the next fortnight until it's broken. Don't worry, the police wont chase you if you aren't wearing a helmet.

Of course, they will eventually steal a bike off the wrong person. Who will:
* Go to the sink estate he knows the thief comes from.
* Flash some cash to get the thief grassed up. (There really is no honour among thieves)
* Go to thiefs house, drag him round the back and batter him badly enough he lands up in hospital for a week.
* Tell thief while administering said battering that if anyone touches his bikes again, he'll come back and do it again, even if it was somebody else so he'd better have a word with all his little ratboy friends.

That happened too.

I often thought about using a dummy ignition key on the bike when in high crime areas.

When the person jumps out at the traffic lights and takes your key and runs away expecting you to run after him - No fear or hassle, just take a 2nd key from your pocket and carry on.

Quite a while ago, I switched to mainly listening to Radio 6 because the music was more my kinda groovy thing than Radio 2 - which I find to be mostly lift music for boomers these days.

But tonight it was full of whiny DJs who seemed to be using their programme instead of going to their fucking therapist. I swear one of them nearly had a nervous breakdown whilst talking about his trans friend who was locked up for (I can't remember what the fuck for, I was mortified by the complete meltdown into emo, I nearly threw up)

So I ended up going onto Radio 4 (going from one extreme to the other) and even they were being weepy and "supportive" - I ended up actually back on Radio 2 but eventually I had to leave the house and walk the dog for ten minutes just to get away from them, LOL

To be fair, I'm super grumpy having had a really difficult few weeks but at least I havent burst into whingeing tears of self-pity in public.

For. Fucks. Sake. Brick Wall Brick Wall Brick Wall

/rant Laughing

Edit: turns out it was a band at a live event not a DJ. Shocked

Still ... Puke

BT/EE supposed to be fitting their fibre thingy, today will be their fifth attempt. First was BT, guy came told me he was only going to put the box in the hall and it was up to me to connect to the TV. Sent him packing. Then EE came, agreed that what I wanted with regards location and cabling, but hadn't brought enough cable, EE again came, but I wasn't connected to the distribution box and so left. Then they just didn't turn up. So now they are coming today. Fingers crossed. Still didn't get the order right, but told that I was to let them fit it, then cancel parts of the contract so that I end up with what I asked for in the first place.

Not exactly a “grinds” but this’ll do. I’m still commuting by car so props to those riders on the A1 around Stevenage, but there’s one guy on a Yamaha MT-something (I think) who weaves big-time instead of riding down the centre-line. You can’t be seen, mate. Three lanes, he’s in the right hand lane but instead of riding the dotted line he swings left to undertake, swings back into the right lane between cars (out of sight of my wing mirror) and then swings back out again. All the way. I don’t change lanes without checking but plenty seem to. It’ll catch matey-boy out.

Also those who use hazard flashers while filtering. Pointless, they’re only noticeable after you’ve filtered past.

Ordered a health monitor thingy to see what my heart rate etc is doing with regard to activities/stress to try to get a handle on some chronic fatigue symptoms.

Checked the system requirements. Android 9 or higher. Fine, my tablet's running 11. Order the monitor and get the link to download the app. Not compatible with my device.

I contact customer support querying this, in short, either tell me how to fix it or tell me how to do a return. They reply saying their app is only for phones, not tablets, because reasons.

I can tell you what those reasons are. Lazy fucking coding.

I totally get the annoyance, but this is pretty normal now. Its the argument I have with my parents, they want this new watch to work as the alarm, links to their phone alarm (my dads in the early stages of dementia so tablets and the like are timed) but their phones fucking prehistoric. You can't expect the bleeding edge to maintain backwards compatability forever. Their choice is use a normal alarm and go find your phone or upgrade your phone for £80, looks the same, works the same, just has a supported OS.

I know its Android, but phones have accelerometers, various other cool items that tablets don't and its rare you have a tablet in your pocket or on your person enough to feed any valuable data to etc.

Like I say, I do get the annoyance though, I have the same with my own home setup, my older reliable hardware is 2.4Ghz, my new fangled gate sensors are 5Ghz, they will not talk. So I need to upgrade my wall mounted tablet and controller to something else or bodge it. Bodged it, but its harder when you can't control the hardware or software like yours.

Nah, it's just straight-up lazy coding.

I landed up buying a used mobile phone just to run this app. It is a 5 year old samsung I got for £15. Literally all it's doing is bluetoothing data from a wearable sensor when it comes into range. The phone hasn't moved from my desk since I got it and I don't have a SIM in it (just connected to the house wifi) and it's working fine. This phone does literally nothing my tablet can't and doesn't do many things my tablet can.

Not a total waste of money because I'll probably use it as a twat nav on my bike too, I made sure I got a waterproof one.

Only reason I'm using this device is a) It's an armband that goes on my upper arm because I can't wear a watch for most of the activities I want to know about and b) It doesn't pester you to do more exercise, that's not the aim here. If anything I need it to tell me when to do less.

With hindsight, I should have refurbed a cheap used garmin watch (they are remarkably user serviceable) and fitted that to an armband.

The basic algorithms in any app are fine but the hardware access in Android changes with the wind direction.

I've written a full screen "kiosk" app and there's a load of hoops to jump through to get proper full screen and that's just for a specific version of Android. An older or newer version might do it a different way or the feature might be completely disabled in a newer version for "security". A developer has to target the oldest version that has a desired feature with said feature still supported in the latest version.

From the St. Albans Cathedral Facebook page,

“Today, a very sad incident occurred at our peregrine falcon nest, resulting in damage to the eggs. We are currently working with the Rural Operational Support Team at Hertfordshire Constabulary, and a person is assisting the police with their enquiries. Exactly that, I'm far from lazy, but I cannot write anything for android pre 12 for my item, the physical item it uses within the kernel has been removed and to get half of what I want, I'd need a custom browser. Android, whilst I'm a heavy user of them and a fan, is awkward.

Not as awkward as iOS...
