How the FUCK do I get this cunting thing off. The rear panel (one with the seat lock).

I've taken off the screw but it's still held in by something. The manual is fucking useless I'm not just yanking it off without knowing how it's held on. FFFS.

looks like 1 screw and 2 pushfit rubber plugs.

Give it a good yank.

stinkwheel Well I just had my hands up a pigs fanny. Which makes your concerns pale into insignificance.

Oh nice thanks, seemed really fastened in there felt like any more force was gonna break sommat.

Just replacing linkage bearings, how would I know if my shock is in bad shape? Looks a bit tatty but the spring isn't rusty or anything.

Generally with a sealed gas shock like that, it's either good or it's not (gas in, or gas out). So if you push down on the back of the bike and it goes down then up once, it's broadly ok. If it bounces a few times, or you can dribble it like a basketball, it's toast.

I once did 450 miles round the Scottish Highlands with a blown shock on my VFR. That's when you find out if your spring rate is right! It was mostly ok as long as you didn't get two bumps in quick sucession, then it all got a bit out of hand.

From the gnarly state of the rubber damper on that one, I'd question if you have a stiff enough spring and/or sufficient preload. Looks like it's bottomed out more than a few times.

How many miles on the bike out of interest? Summer only?

It has definitely bottomed out a few times - smashed part of my number plate. I think it's on the "softest" setting (as per the manual with the twisty bit above the spring).

Only ridden in summer, but on ~ 21k miles now so may be worth replacing.

Well, you could try adjusting the preload so the static sag is close to where it ought to be and see what it's like. There are a lot of guides on how to do so online. It's effectively a bit of faffing about seeing how far the suspension compresses with the weight on and off the back wheel.

Not that there's a lot you can do but it looks like there are 4 clicks of preload adjustment there. It shouldn't be bottoming.
