Sun's out, guns out old bikes out! Had a tinker with the Old Fella's Triumph.

The carbs had been sat on the bench since last year and the bike had literally just been gathering dust. I stuck in some smaller jets and put the carbs back together. Still not 100% sure we have the pilot jets in the right place as there are two spots they go on Mk2 Concentrics. The thing had wet-sumped being sat so long so needed draining and refilling. Cleaned the plugs, carbs back on tank back on...

Kicked over with some EZ-Start but no-go from the tank. "I wonder what state the fuel's in after all this time?" Went to take a sample from the reserve side and about a thimble full came out Rolling Eyes Oh well, time to toddle over to the petrol station.

Oil, filter and sump bolt change. A few others checks.

Dreaded front sprocket area clean too. Always gets filthy in there.

Was going to take it in for a full service but Trump took all my money.

Did all the physical servicing on the Husky ahead of its first MoT next month. The oil looked pretty good, probably didn't really need changing. Not only is there an oil filter...

https://i.imgur.com/H26Ie2u.jpeg

...but a plastic and a metal oil screen too!

https://i.imgur.com/NgTEcp9.jpeg

Coolant was dead easy, drain bolt under the pump. Brake fluid barely discoloured but there did seem to be a few air bubbles in the rear. (The front was perfectly fine.) I skipped swapping the spark plug as really, the bike has no miles on it. Somehow I though the bike had done more but no, less than 3,000.

While I was about it I put the pillion pegs back on and reverted to the stock 15 tooth front sprocket. Really didn't need 14T after all the fuelling, exhaust and air box tweaks. Pulling away from a junction in 2nd and not noticing confirmed that.

Just the simple checks to run through and it'll be all set.

is that a dent in the exhaust where the oil is or supposed to look that way?

Yeah, it's a cheesy way to maximise ground clearance. The stock down pipe has an oval section:

Or you weld up an oversized pipe and get an elephant to sit on it Wink

The Old Fella's very happy. Previously we re-jetted and reassembled the carbs on the Triumph, played "guess where the pilot jet goes" (Amal Mk2 Concentrics) and realised there was basically no fuel left in the tank Rolling Eyes

With some fresh fuel we dialled in some basic idle/mixture settings and gave it a blast of EZ-start just for luck. Eventually it started! Needed a little throttle but at least it warmed up okay. TBH we only fiddled with the idle/mixture till it sounded reasonable and didn't stall.

Going down the road, good news! It actually runs pretty well - no hesitations, no flat spots - not perfect but pretty good for a '70s Triumph. With the engine warm it kicks over after one or two tries. Lovely Smile

Now it's going straight on eBay. The Old Fella's too creaky to kick over agricultural engines with no decompression Smile

removed the swing arm on the Skorpion. cleaned, regreased, painted along with the linkage etc..

Also spotted teh sprocket had 45 stamped on it and yet another I had been given was stamped 43. I figured it might be better to gear it up a bit so I swapped it over..But then whaat! the chain barely fits.. a real struggle even to get the adjusters on by a thread..

How can that be? Surely I made the chainline shorter.. After much scratching I counted the teeth on the 45 sprocket and wooah is only 39 teeth.. WTF?

So 45 was in fact CT45 steel grade and in real faint marking you could just make out another part number JTR018-39.

Doh.

I got given a decent seat for my Trophy at a camping club meet in 2022 (?). I never put it on because I felt alright with my original seat, despite the condition - but in October I had an operation on my back for cauda equina and I have noticed now that I am starting to ride more that specifically it seems on the Trophy - my back hurts...

So decided to put the new seat on and see if it makes a difference. It's firmer (and looks much better) so might actually provide some relief. I didn't bother transferring the strap for now. I have no friends Crying or Very sad

Not trying to tell you what to do with your life but should you even be riding a motorbike?

It's just that my eldest has had back ops and there's a great long list of "don't even think of doing this" afterwards: motorbikes, rollercoasters, jet fighters, etc. Smile

I wasn't given any list of things not to do. I have a review in a couple of months time- I must remember to ask the Doctor if riding is really a good idea. Depends on the bike I think. Really need to get my Honda CX500 back on the road- big seat and very comfortable. Maybe indeed it might be time to sell all the shit I own Laughing

Removed the main stand from Skorp to paint. Both bolts really tight. Enlist the help of big bro who has musckles like Atlas and managed to shear one M10! No sweat I thought until it come out and its a special shouldered pivotbolt (not sleeved) with a handy and 'standard' 13.3 mm shoulder.. Thinking

Bleedin' Gehrmans!

Maybe you can drill and tap your special 13.3mm shouldered pivotbolt and fit a stud. Anybody with a drill press ought to be able to do that, and that precious, german, load-bearing shoulder will remain intact.

Indeed - that's the plan Thumbs Up . I can buy 13mm OD M10 sleeves on ebay - but I think that 0.3mm will be noticeable.
.. first, I now have to remove the exhaust so the pivot will come out and that means all the horrors of rusted exhaust studs. Neutral

Not with a bit of 0.1mm shim wrapped around it.

If you dont happen to have any 0.1mm shim material I suggest you have a can of beer and a think, something will come up Wink

Right. You sure don't want to disturb the precision operation of your main stand. I doubt you would notice the difference, especially if you wear boots when you hoist the bike up on the stand. But you never know. Those Germans engineered that extra 0.3mm into the pivot bolt for a reason.
