Afternoon all,

I'm selling a ZX9R on behalf of a friend. It's been in dry storage for the past year and half so I'm going to put an MOT on it.

Before I sell it I'd like to tidy up the pain work on Swingarm. It's flaking off and look unsightly.

Apart the wheels looing a bit untidy the rest of the bike is bob on so the swingarm spoils in a bit.

Any recommendation on best way to go about this. I don't want to spend a fortune but I also don't want to bodge it. Please see images below.

Went like this.. 43 years old(2013) decided to do CBT to get a 125 for new job. Bought 2011 YBR, loved it for three months then hated it because it was too god damn slow. Did DAS 4 months later then bought RF600 Loved it, sold it bought Bandit 1200(K3). EFFIN lOVED IT. Wanted something a bit more sporty so got Triumph Sprint ST 955i (53). Not sporty enough so now on my GSXR 1000 K3 and absolutely love it. 1 year down the line, nearly died way too many times on this bike. Sold it. Had a 6 month break. Missed biking so now, Aug 2019 have a 1999 ZX9r. What a beauty she is too.

Looks a bit much for a dollop of touch-up paint. IMHO either bite the bullet and take the swing arm off to properly repaint it or don't bother.

I was thinking maybe that's the way to go. It's not even that expensive to do, just time consuming. Got to be worth it though. Get it on the bench and give it a good once over.

Take it off, wire brush off the loose stuff and corrosion, THOROUGHLY de-grease and repaint.

From personal experience, some paints are more forgiving than others with regard to finish. I've found the simoniz paints very easy to apply neatly if you want to use a rattle can, they do a wheel paint which would fit the bill nicely.

For brushing on, POR15 or tractol seem to self-level extremely well. The POR15 is tough as old boots and moisture cures really quickly. It would be excellent for use on a swingarm. Tractol is excellent but takes a long time to fully harden. With both, you can effectively slap them on reasonably evenly then wait and keep the faith, the brush marks settle out as they cure.

Unless it’s a keeper I wouldn’t bother. It’ll be a pain to clean up by hand and the finished swingarm will only show up the flaking wheel paint and corroded OE shock. Once out you might as well fit new bearings, and so it goes. A buyer likely either won’t care or will do a fuller restoration anyway.

I renovated my 6R but I knew I was keeping it so I did a proper job, albeit not massively expensive. Shot-blasted and etch-primed by a local firm, I hand-sanded the etched surface smooth(er) and then got another local firm to spray-paint and lacquer using paints supplied by me from RS Bike Paints that gave a colour match with the frame (because not all silvers will). I installed new bearings and had the non-OE shock serviced and a shiny new spring fitted.

Go large because you love it, or flog as is.

Of course, if you want an original finish, strip it down then apply the thinnest coat of cheap silver paint you can mange with minimal prep and no primer. Which is why it landed up looking like that in the first place.

I rubbed down all the rust then just used Toolstation galvanising spray (high zinc) as a primer then their Quick silver over the top. I also tried their clear acrylic lacquer however that appeared to soften everything and took ages to cure so I wouldn't bother again. Also on a swinging arm.

Some good advise there thanks all.

Depending on how much the paint is going to cost I can buy a second hand swingarm in pretty good shape for £50 so that might be the easier route.

I thought about leaving it as is and selling it but I think it really spoils the bike looking like this. It would probably put me off.

If I were keeping it i'd do a proper good job on it and spend some serious wonga.

For a quick tart-up, plastikote rust-not is cheap and easy. It's all in the prep though, no paint will stick to anything loose or oily.

Yeah turns out Swingarms are relatively cheap and plentiful as they are one of the last things to get twanged in an accident.

This is a very easy way to end up spending an awful lot fixing the bike and then decide to keep it.

You take the swingarm out to touch up the paint. Might as well repaint the whole thing while it's out. And replace the bearings, old ones were old.

Oh, the shock is dirty. Might as well clean it while I'm here. New bushes can't hurt. Hadn't noticed that leak before, might as well change it.

Now the wheels look scabby compared to the swingarm. I'll touch them up. Might as well get the tyres off to do it properly. It would be a shame to put the old tyres back on to the repainted wheels, so I'll fit new ones.

And so on, until your £3k bike owes you £6k.

Lol.. I resisted some of those temptations, but I did clean and grease bearings and bought a replacement shock (not new), then decided I need to paint both stands, but first I have to remove the exhaust, oh my those heads studs are rusty and the headers need a good clean, but the rad needs to come off to access the studs! Oh well I'll paint that too before more corrosion sets in... Laughing

Small wonder I never get around to riding the damn things,.
