Before you finalise on May, you might want to bear this little gem in mind:
https://www.euronews.com/travel/2022/11/25/long-queues-and-scams-will-the-new-eu-entry-system-cause-border-chaos

Basically the EU's new Border Control system is due to come into effect then, involving biometric data, paid-for visas etc for non-EU citizens, so I think it's fairly safe bet that border crossings in May will be utter carnage.... Shocked

Seems to have been delayed....indefinitely.

If you’re after a spot by the coast with some sweet mountain roads nearby, Costa Brava is a solid choice. Tossa de Mar, for example, has that perfect mix—chill beach vibes with awesome, twisty roads just a quick ride away. Me and some friends did something like this last year.
One thing, though—definitely book the bikes ahead if you’re going in May. It gets packed, and rentals can run out quick. And if you’re flying over, check out TravelBusinessClass for some good deals on business flights. I managed to save a bit and used it for extra stuff on the trip.

Not for those of us with both British and Irish Passports!

Sounds like an awesome plan! Spain in May is perfect for biking—great weather and plenty of scenic routes. Costa Brava or Andalusia could be ideal since they offer a mix of coastal roads and mountain twisties. I'd recommend booking business class flights and bikes early to get the best deals. Also, staying a bit outside the main tourist areas can make it easier to explore without the crowds. But i prefer Italy Razz

Hi Valery - stick your business air-plane flights up your arse and ride there. Middle Finger

Just done a ride from Halifax, Dunkirk, Belgium, Germany, Switzerland, Lichtenstein, Austria, Italy, France, Andorra & Spain.

Tunnel down, Santander back.

The weather was f...g shx, I've never been so wet or cold in my entire life on a bike, no way I would recommend, next time its mid June or later.

I did 2100 miles over 10 days (7 days actual riding).

Overnight ferry to Caen

Caen to Saint Andre de Cubzac.

Saint Andre de Cubzac to Bilbao via the Basque backroads.

Day off in Bilbao

Bilbao to Leon via the Picos (San Glorio pass, Potes etc)

Leon to Braga (Portugal) via Ponferrada

Braga to Lugo (Spain)

Lugo to Ourense via Cabo Vidío

Ourense back to Bilbao via the Picos again (San Glorio pass)

Ferry back to Portsmouth from Bilbao

The only bad weather days were the first journey to Bilbao with horrendous wind in the morning and intermittent rain in the afternoon and the day from Bilbao to Leon with biblical amounts of rain, wind and fog. I was quite lucky to make it out alive over some of the passes where it got VERY dicey with the worst wind I've ever ridden in. Visibility about 30ft for mile after mile, gale force winds and never ending rain.

However, it was one of the best experiences of my life. It also seems that a lot of people are getting even worse weather now.

I didn't see a single UK registered vehicle all the way from Ferry to Ferry. Infact I only heard a single English accent once and that was in Braga - which in a lot of ways made it much better due to the almost total lack of tourists.

Not sure I could deal with riding those routes in summer time and I don't know how people do it.

May is usually the ideal time the weather patterns have just been different this year with hardly any rain in Northern Europe but copious amounts for Iberia especially.
Riding in the 35C+ heat of July and August is not much fun and takes a while to get acclimatised to it.

That's true- after getting to Istanbul, I was sick for days.
