Firstly, let me say that I couldn't give a hoot about trivial donkey plop internet B/S like the karma system on this forum (because it's really childish) but I am a little intrigued (and bored today tbh).

So how does it work exactly?
I started off with a square white box that turned to light green, and then it changed to deep green, and then I got 2 deep green boxes, and then it turned back to white. After that it turned to light pink and now it's gone red.

It seems people must not like me on here and the karma colour is controlled by the members and how popular someone is. Not childish at all is it...?!?!?

This suggests you started off OK but became irritating and/or abusive - in the opinion of other contributors - you don't have to care.. some do some don't.

Joining a new community means taking a measured approach, you may want to hold off on some opions/responses which could be seen as inflammatory, until you've been accepted and then you can let rip, but as in real life how to interact with other people will determne how they respond to you!

We all have different opinions, tastes etc. and what you may find acceptable others won't.

If you are abusive in a response to another member who posted a reasonable response then you might get bad karma, just like if you post something everyone agrees with you might get good karma.

In general this forum has a wealth of knowledge and experience which is freely shared to all, there is of course the usual piss taking but that's par for the course.

Welcome to the wonderful world of BCF Thumbs Up

The Karma formula is a closely guarded secret. The manual ratings from members are only part of it. For all we know it might do a grammar check and mark you down for mixing up "your" and "you're" Smile I'm pretty sure it doesn't like people editing posts after other people have replied, i.e. "re-writing history".

It does do a fantastic job of penalising spam without human intervention. The Internet is littered with the shattered remains of forums that didn't keep on top of such things.

And yet here you are posting a thread about the karma system. Razz

If you want to know about how it works then either click on the karma blobs at the top of your screen or click on "Help & FAQs" and then you can be enlightened.

Laughing

It really doesn't like poor spelling, grammar or punctuation. More so than swearing.

Ah okay, I see. I wish I had the option and privilege to rate peoples posts just like they do with me because, believe me, I see a lot of posts on here from members I don't particularly like that I would negatively react to if I was allowed to treat them the same way they treat me.
What a very peculiar two-tier system. Keir Starmer must be running this forum. I can't even rate other members posts?!?!?...Mmm Thinking

I do recall you get higher ratings for posting about bike issues, workshop etc.. rather that what you had for your tea last night..

I don't understand exactly how the karma system works either. You can't rate posts until your karma is high enough. If it goes too low, it'll start making you preview and speelcheck your posts. It was instigated by the admin Korn who doesn't come on here much these days. He doesn't like text speak, poorly formatted posts both in terms of grammar and spelling, shitposting, profanity, offtopic threads and political bickering. It's been coded to penalise these. User ratings of posts also have an effect.

It's his forum and that's how it works, it's worked that way for decades.

The way to get your karma up is to post useful, relevant and moderately verbose posts in the motorcycling sections with acceptable levels of grammar and spelling. If you preview and spellcheck before posting, it'll go up higher and may offer you tips about how you could improve it (like warnings about sweariness). Help someone in the workshop section, post a review about your bike in the show and tell, tell us about a tour you did in touring and exploration.

Fair enough. Thanks for the explanation Thumbs Up
I haven't got much to offer in terms of "biking" as I'm newly back after a 10 year hiatus from the two-wheeled world so I'm only here to chit-chat and have a bit of banter with lads-n-lasses at the moment. Apparently that means the forum software hates me and if my little square box turns black I will be booted off the forum/banned...

It would seem that negative karma is often dished out by just a small handful of members. The lily-livered wokesters momentarily untie themselves from their mother's apron strings and downvote posts/posters that don't conform with their upside-down groupthink.
They are probably melts IRL who only get their brave on when hiding behind the safety shield of a keyboard.

I recall Rogerborg had lots of yellow blobs and he'd joined roughly the same time as me.
Looking at his profile, I saw his posting rate was about 30 times a day !!
My average post rate was/is around one and if I really wanted lotsa blobs I should post more, but I just dont care.

I've been on lots of forums and broadly speaking it's best to go easy
until you establish yourself, then go mental show your true self after that.
Don't take stuff personally or too seriously
this usually leads to rage posts, flouncing or banning.

From my initial and first impressions it would seem the member "Tracey Suntan" is the queen leader of the internet bitchy-hate party...

It’s Tracey Suntan-King actually and my bile is reserved just for you FFS triggered by your daft, misogynistic, wank-post about fantasy women. Other than that I have observed that you do post banal and trivial nonsense but that’s inoffensive enough. You clearly don’t have much else going on in your life.

BTW I haven’t given you any karma ratings, good or bad.

Many people over the years have complained about the karma system. Without exception, when any of them have suffered from the karma system it's not been the fault of the karma system.

Dear Mr/Mrs FFS68
Here are some polite hints to help you back onto the road to green and gold:

1. Sometimes you can tip it back the other way if you post in more "bike-relevant" categories. Posts in Random Banter are rated lower by whatever fantastical algorithm that runs the karma system.
2. Play nice (ish)
3. But not so nice that you have to lick anyone's arse
4. Pretending that you don't give a fuck about the karma system will only provoke those shit-stirrers amongst us (and there are many Laughing ) to give you more reds.

Doesn't matter if you've not been on bikes for 10 years, if you are back on one now, or even thinking saucy bikery thoughts about an old 125 you might buy and give it another go on 2 wheels, then that's enough of a reason to stick around.

I don't think I've ridden my bikes for almost a year (I'm blaming Grr666) ... but I'm still here and nobody noticed.

Some of us are quite nice really.
But the B side of most of us is what you'd expect to find when you turn over a rock, cos if you've been in the biking world before, you probably know not to prod a sleeping alligator.

5. Best not swear till you have at least one gold Laughing I've been here donkey's years and I've never got to two full gold cos I cuss like a ship full of seamen. Shifty

You sound like a crusty old coot, and most of us also are ... so I guess you might probably bang along with us generally, if you pull your horns in for a while and let us get used to your peculiar ways.

Or not.
Good luck.
Mr. Green Thumbs Up

If you block people, the karma system may put a li'l black mark...

Its a proper wanker of a thing until you either get the better of it/us or give up and abuse us all to hell until you go from red to black.

Then its bye bye BCF for you. Laughing

NB: We didn't make it. Some other herbert made it and then seemingly did a runner and left us to our own devices. Being on BCF is a bit like being at the Hotel California.
