OK, so being a computer dinosaur I've never even thought about getting a VPN. So should I? In fact why should I and if I should is there some stand out provider to go for? I see lots of adverts for NordVPN.

If you visit a website and it comes up with a message saying "we need to verify your age" or "sorry, this content is not available in your country" then yes, you need a VPN. But remember: every purchase of NordVPN kills a fairy Shocked

On a PC just download brave browser you can use a private window with Tor. Or download Tor browser.
On a tablet or phone brave doesn't seem to offer the tor window you can use Proton is a good free one and shows where you are connected often in Holland or Poland.
You will notice odd things like adverts or info boxes in Polish. So no need to use it all the time can cause problems with UK sites.

The necessity for a VPN pretty much depends on what you do when you are online. If you use the internet like a normal-ish person you won't have anything to hide...

The link above to the Blackbelt Barrister's Youtube shows that content is being filtered if you're not using a VPN so maybe "If you use the internet like a normal-ish person and don't want your content censored..."

Ah, so as the government doesn't comprise of normal people it's okay for them to hide things from us?

They don't adhere to or even follow the same set of rules that they impose on "us" and, annoyingly, there's nothing that we can say or do about it in opposition to their hierarchy system.

Not true. Threaten enough violence and they do take notice.

That old chestnut? Why not add "won't anybody think of the children". It has as much relevance.

I have nothing to hide but I choose to hide it anyway for the simple reason that it's nobody else's business.

In the past I've used a VPN, and anonymous surfing software that cloaked my IP address from websites, and secure encrypted email services to protect myself from hackers/snoops etc, but that was when I was mixed up buying/selling certain things online that could've got me in a lot of trouble and I was really paranoid every time i went online.
My life's boring now so I don't bother with any of it these days. The only "questionable" thing I do online these days is watch too much porn but if someone wants to intercept my connection and snoop at my sexual preferences, that's fine by me, but I hope they're not easily offended Laughing Very Happy Razz

The only reason I would pay for a VPN now would be if i wanted to hide my online activity from my Internet Service Provider and The Police or I needed a more secure/encrypted connection for business/financial reasons.

Sucker. There's always a hidden catch with free stuff on the internet but good luck and have fun...

My advice for what it's worth? Sign up for the trial period with a reputable site like NORD (or other well known brand name) and cancel quick if you don't like/want/need it.
