Looking at getting one to play about on and scratch this itch I’ve got.

Seen a couple on Autotrader..

Which one would you have a look at?

You know you've posted 3 different bikes? A K era GSX-R600, an SRAD era GSX-R600, and a GSX600F which is basically a Bandit with a square section frame and a jellymould fairing.

What do you want from the bike? Do you want to commute on it? Do you want to do trackdays?

The SRAD (corona colours) is a decent enough bike but it's definitely a generation behind the K1. Its bigger, heavier, peakier and with less peak power. They are essentially classics now. The K1(blue and white 2002 reg) will be a flipping great sportsbike, but it might break your back if you're not as flexible as you once were.

The GSX? Well it's stupid money for a bike that is not very well regarded. They are fat, heavy and not particularly agile. If you got one for £1000 to commute on, I'd say well done, but if you want one to do trackdays on, and you pay that much? I'd be calling the men in white coats unless you really had a reason like your Dad used to race one or some weird emotional attachment like that.

Do you want to work on it yourself? Do you plan to get the suspension rebuilt?

Need more info.

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

Some other kind soul here mentioned sticking a few quid down on an R1 & scratching the itch but I’ve struggled to find a cheap(er) one.

I want a bike I can have a bit of fun on & see if I can put up with a bit of discomfort while having aforementioned fun!
Nothing more, nothing less.

So you want a supersports to do some hooning on? On the road? Trackdays? Club racing?

What else have you ridden sportsbike-wise? Because if nothing, any of the 600 supersports will blow your mind. Maybe something like a CBR6 which can hoon with the best of them (and hold many a track record) but can also happily do your daily commute or a bit of touring. I got my wife one (early alloy frame model) and it's a really beautifully set up bike that compliments your riding while at the same time calls you a pussy for winding off in the corners.

I'd suggest an R1 would potentially be a bit much if the bikes in your sig are what you've ridden to-date. They are a bit much for me and I've been riding for 30 years.

I want to pay as little as possible and have some fun. (Road mostly, the odd track day & do some distance to see mates)
If I can get my legs round my ears and not hurt too much then I’ll invest in a bigger/better bike, I just don’t want to get one and lose money on a trade in (again) just to have realised I’ve made a mistake.

Yep my signature shows the extent (or lack) of experience I have.

Not bothered about anything too big but a ‘SPORTY’ 600 will do. Others have suggested a CBR too.

A K1 GSXR600 will blow your freaking mind. It's a 160mph bike that'll go around corners and brake like nothing you've ever conceived. It is also balanced and manageable enough (just) to not spit you off if you're careful with it.

An R1 is not that.

The SRAD might be a bit too bloated, a bit too peaky and the Teapot? Nah, forget it. Buy a CBR600FX and be happy instead.

The CBR is a slightly softer bike than the K2 but not by a lot. It'll still send you at 150mph and can be at the front of the fast group on a trackday, and you can commute and tour on it too. I think (if you ignore off roading) it's one of the greatest all rounders ever made. The K2 is very similar but it just has that slightly harder edge.

I have a mate with a K2 GSXR600, and he's at the front end of the fast group on trackdays. It really is that good a bike. you've got people on Fireblades and R1s who get overtaken by him (on the corners, admittedly).

The more I see the older GSX, the more I like it. He’s sent me a 4 minute video of him starting it, warming up & it running. It sounds and looks lovely.I know it’s a bit of a tank but compared to the others it’s done far less miles and been stored away.

All checks completed and not a blemish on its record. According to the MoTs it did 3500 in its first 3 years and a few of the years it’s covered one or two miles at the most.

Everything is original including the tyres.. which I guess is the first thing that’ll need changing.

My local Suzuki dealer have even said that if I don’t like it they’ll take it off me for their collection. The guy has sent them a list of other ones in his collection in case they want some of them too.

It’s amazing when things come together, or appear to.

There is one flaw in your plan... Teapots are shit.
