I dunno. Some people have some wasteful views on maintenance. ____________________ CBT: 12/06/10, Theory: 22/09/10, Module 1: 09/11/10, Module 2: 19/01/11

Seeing as I feel a bit sorry for OP here I thought I'd add a further 2p (despite his prior insults of my attempts to help him).
So, Suzukis seem to have this really annoying issue - Not related to rust in the tank, or carb problems or electrical problems.
They have this little filter that sits *inside* the fuel pump assembly which could well be described as a tea bag filter. I found this out to my cost when my GSX-S1000F decided it didn't want to go above 3000rpm. Turns out this pesky little filter just goes bad after time. Not blocked per se, not full of gunk but it shrinks, turns black and looks literally like a used teabag. I had to remove the tank on my GSX-S, which annoyingly needs the fairing off, some of the trim around the ignition switch and seat unit and a bunch of other gubbins. It's a massive pain in the backside. On the GSX-R it should be a lot easier. I then had to turn the tank upside down, remove the fuel pump assembly, dismantle it and replace the filter with a new filter. The effort was much more than the parts, as the part was twelve quid off of ebay.
No issue with injectors, no issue with the tank (although I did spot some spots of rust on the underside) and no issue with icing as it's injected.
Once the filter was replaced, the bike ran absolutely fine again. ____________________ British beauty: Triumph Street Triple R; Loony stroker: KR1S; Track fun: GSXR750 L1; Commuter Missile: GSX-S1000F
Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another. |

Oh and if anyone wants to meet up and give it a listen to /blast when it’s all done.. I’m in the NG postcode area bordering on S44.
Hey I might even have a bike and be able to travel! ____________________ CBT - Aug24, Theory - Jun25, Mod 1 - Jul25, Mod 2 - Sep25

at least you are getting the bike sorted in winter and not missing out on the nice riding weather. |
I appreciate that!
Shop are retracing their steps to see if they’ve missed something or the fuel pump is faulty.
Classic or not, next time I’m buying new(er)! |
Newer is better, but so is a higher mileage bike that's been used. Without the fluids circulating and being changed regularly these kind of problems happen from just standing - at least teh tank isn't rusyted through. A bloke I know has had one of these SRADs in a container (worst posible storage place) for well over 15 years,I daren't think of the parlous state its in. ____________________ Now: A100, GT250A, XJ598, FZ750

Your tribulations prove the validity of the notion that machinery suffers neglect through non-use. [\quote]
Without a doubt! Definitely been an eye opener! And I never even considered that not draining the tank could be such a pain in the ass!

Maybe your mechanic should have considered replacing all of the 35-year-old parts with ones that come in the rebuild kit. What a concept!
[\quote]
I’m not sure which bit you’re referring to… does a fuel pump rebuild kit include float valve needles? (I’m still learning so it might be a stupid question!)
But AFAIK, they had to order in a separate kit for that.
quote="jeffyjeff"]
Your sad story casts doubt that your mechanic is an "expert" just because he/she accepted money for experimenting with your bike. I can only imagine your frustration. If this happens enough, maybe you will be moved to pick up some tools and do the work yourself. Better to fuck it up yourself and learn a lesson than to pay someone else to do it. |
Yeah I have felt frustrated but as you’ve pointed it’s not a new bike and older things are temperamental, I mean look at some of the members here They’ve said I’ve been more patient than a lot of people would which I don’t believe.. I’ve been chomping at the bit to actually get to ride it and I’ve probably been asshole and they’re just too polite to say so.
As for doing it myself.. as much as I’d like to, I don’t have a covered space, or any space for that matter. And yeah I might be paying through the nose for the work but at least I know it’ll get done & I can take it back if it’s not completed. They still haven’t charged me for any work and won’t be doing so till I’m satisfied.
Having said that someone suggested another place, Melted Sliders I think it was called. Thing is the guys I use are just around the corner and there aren’t many repair shops round here & the few that are I wouldn’t take a toy car to! Maybe I should give them a try.
Everyday’s a school day. All your thoughts and comments (barbed or not) are much appreciated! ____________________ CBT - Aug24, Theory - Jun25, Mod 1 - Jul25, Mod 2 - Sep25
