Took my SV to a mates house today for him to have a look at it, ref the smoking problems etc...

First up.. listening to it.. no rattles or knocks, doesn't sound anything unusual at all.

Tank off, airbox off and we notice that 1) air box isn't sealed on properly and 2) it's full of oil... so we use a air line to clean out all the breather hoses, then clean out the airbox and catch tank then finally clean the air filter out.

All bolts back together.. check a few other things and we notice that the oil filter isn't tightened up.. it was practically falling off, which HOPEFULLY explains the oil loss. Top her up with oil and alls well.

Next up, front brake.. is pathetically poor.. so it gets fresh fluid and nice fresh bleed... MUCH better, more feel and stops better although still not that great - braided lines required there!!

I mentioned the exhaust had an air leak and was blowing a fair bit.. so 2 seconds looking at it realises that none of it's fitted correctly.. the link pipes are 1.5 inches away from where they should be - must have worked itself loose or something - so exhaust off and link pipe put on properly, can adjusted and not only has it stopped it blowing BUT it's also moved the can back about 2 inches so it doesn't stick out any more Mr. Green also makes the bike sound nicer and OH MY GOD is it more responsive.. must be that and the air filter was causing some bogging problems as it didn't feel that great before.. but now it pulls a lot better and feels smoother as well as sounding better!!!

Last on the cards was to fix the left heel guard which was a bit wobbily, nothing a couple of washers didn't fix.

All in all, bike feels a LOT different, more responsive, smoother and just a lot nicer. As for the smoking, I'm hoping that it won't do it any more.. if it does still smoke then I guess it is the valve steam seals, but at the minute we're pretty confident theres nowt wrong with it at all! Mr. Green

No more wheelies for the SV...! I'm still selling it but not for a while, going to wait until I pass my car test then sell the SV to pay for the car and bike trailer for the KTM!!!

Well, that's provided it doesn't smoke any more!!

Anyway please pray that it's fixed just with the simple maintenace that was done.

Oh only problem is the clutch now slips a lot but that'll be because of the mix of oil where it's been topped up a few times.. going to do an oil change soon and that should sort the clutch slip as well Smile

It's not 100% fixed yet, won't find out till tomorow/next day I guess.. gotta run it for a few days and see if it still smokes.

If it does, then I'm not sure what to do next Confused

If it doesn't then great Mr. Green time to fit quick action throttle, braided lines all round, oil change and double bubble screen Twisted Evil

Sell it before you have another chance to break it or to leave the oil filter un-done. Razz

On my GS500, if you don't do nuts and bolts tight they vibrate off. It's a pain in the arse.

Hi

Hopefully that has sorted it out.

I have had new oil filters leak around the seal before now. Seems not to take much as when I have taken them off and looked I have found no obvious reason for the leak.

All the best

Keith

Wahey, nice one yams sir. Looks like you got lucky and have learned your lesson. Surprised you didn't bother to have a look at the bike yourself to see if anything was visually a miss!

You of course....do want one of these.

No one is touching the CBR. It will go in my living room on paddock stands and wrapped up in bubble wrap, newspaper and cardboard with padlocks on it so that I can't break it!!! Laughing

Fired her up this morning and still loads of smoke Sad seems now to be just white and doesn't smell as much though... it was bluey colour before. Don't know if that's good or bad.. I'll ride it a few days and see if the smoke stops or anything Sad

Check if it is losing coolant, before riding. Could be a headgasket, with coolant mixing with the oil, if it has overheated through oil starvation, the headgasket could be shot. That would account for the white smoke.

That sounds a bit cheaper than valve stem seals too Laughing

Checked coolant yesterday though and it seemed to be within the right levels. But saying that I don't know what it was at before (i.e could have been right to max fill line and lost a lot)

What's best way to check if losing coolant?

Only way to check is to run it, and see if it is losing coolant. Obviously you will not leak any physically, but it will mix with the oil inside the cylinder head and produce that whitish smoke/steam. Just top it up to a point where you know where it is, then go for a ride and check every now and then. The moment you see it go down dramatically, head back. If it is a small hole, it may not lose that much, but still produce a lot of smoke.

Did this in the Buick Doh! The intake gasket went on it, allowing the coolant into the mixture. By the time we had realised it, it had used over 1.5 gallons of coolant (!) and blown the headgasket through over heating.

The bike ONLY smokes when I start it from cold in the mornings though... and a little bit when I start it after work.. if it was coolant then wouldn't it smoke all the time?

I think its normal for a bike to smoke a little when you start it after leaving it for a while.

I always assumed it abit of condensation thats formed in the exhaust coming out as steam?

And all of my bikes have done it, even Keiths FZR, that I borrowed for a week did it. Smile

could be just condensation if it is only doing it at the start. My bike smokes at the start. Could you possibly get a picture of what it is pumping out?

Minds you, the Buick only smokes on startup, but the headgasket has still gone.
