I'm considering it by bike this year. It's at the end of January so I've got time to concoct plans.

My idea is to set off just after new year and do a shitload of camping out and sussing out B&B ahead of time for the festivities. It's going to be grim cold I know but it's an adventure.

To be honest I don't even think I'd want to come back when it's over because the current modern world holds no value to me but that's a long story and I have no idea what I could do up there for a life but hey life is for living or why bother.

Dark too, it's dark most of the time that time of year up there.

Is your camping gear up to snuff? Arctic grade. If an Atlantic storm rolls in it's no joke, people get snowed in for days/weeks and they have houses and 4x4s.

Its a pagan/viking mid winter event in the Shetlands I think (or possibly Orkneys) - one for the masochists!

I hope you have got any accomodation and ferries booked, because you are not likely to get a booking now and be ready for the lack of daylight at this time of year. Today (20th Dec) they only have 5:45 of daylight.

Shetland, they dress up as vikings, go on a 2 week drinking bender and set fire to stuff. Something to do when it's cold and dark.
