Couldn't care less, not even read or listened to anything about it ... nothing to do with me!

I never took any notice of the place. Now I learn it has the world's biggest oil reserves, and is bigger in area than the Ukraine - which is big. It's in cahoots with China Russia and Cuba for defence and yet half its oil goes to the US..

It's GDP has crashed under the current/seized president who by all accounts was a cuunt and only in power due to rigged elections.

I'm not sure if that still allows Trump to 'invade'... But he's not a patient man it seems.

Despite the fact that It would appear that by and large the Venezuelans are happy with what has happened, I think the action was wrong, America is not the world police and should not be allowed to get away with doing whatever they feel best suits them at any given time - but then who is going to stop them?

Would America have been happy with Russia, or China, or India or Brazil or any other nation on earth carrying out the same thing in Venezuela? The obvious answer is No, because it was not about drugs trafficking or a corrupt leader, it was about power over Venezuelan resources.

On a related note, I have seen people suggesting that the USA could never do the same to the UK because we have nukes.

Hand on heart I do not believe that we would nuke the USA in any circumstance short of them nuking us first. A nuclear attack on America would be actual suicide for the entire country.

I'd go so far as to say that if the USA swept in and took the King from right under our noses, I do not believe we would respond militarily beyond maybe some slight resistance during the act itself, but once he was taken we would be powerless, and we would certainly not hit back with nukes in any case.

The simple answer is that the USA has grown too big for the UK or Europe to handle, and in a situation where Europe ended up fighting the USA (e.g. a theoretical Greenland invasion where Europe decides to actively fight back (which again I do not believe would happen)), Russia would likely seize the opportunity to strike in the east.

Given how well all previous US military interventions in Central and South American countries have historically gone...

It may turn out to be a good thing because the inevitable skip fire it'll turn into might hasten a regime change in the US too.

A few things that may get overlooked...

Chavez "confiscated" a load of US assets in Venezuela in 2007. There's still plenty of ppl in government who remember that and still salty. I doubt the Americans did any favours with contracts but theft is theft.

Venezuela borders Guyana and Maduro had previous done some sabre-rattling about invading, funnily enough not long after the recent discovery of oil! Guyana is an ex-colony and English speaking, God save the King and f*ck the Pinkos, etc.

I was in Venezuela back in the late 70's, early 80's. Even then it was utterly gobsmacking how poor 90% was considering the oil revenue it had. Lovely people who lived in shanty towns yet loads had big American cars outside. Such a weird place.

It had one of the best brothels in South America near Punto Cardon, the Rancho. Dance!

Perhaps that's what Trump is after.

One of the main reasons for the Falklands war was General Galtieri using nationalism to attempt to rally support, the failing economy didn't help.
Trump is trying to do the same. He is rallying nationalism by going after South America and attempting a land grab a lá Russias attempts in Ukraine with his threats over Greenland.

we are seeing a collapse in farming in the US, the world is moving away from American weapons, insurance costs are through the roof as are food and energy prices and although the economy by pure numbers is doing well the rift between the rich and the poor is greater than it has ever been.

We are living in a time where the leader of the free world has never read history and seems to be on a path of repeating every mistake made by his predecessors.

Trump is a narcissist on a global scale who has finally realised he won’t get the Nobel Peace Prize he covets (because Obama got one, although he didn’t deserve it either). With that ambition gone you’ve got a disappointed, arrogant fool with control of the mightiest military force the World has ever seen. He can’t resist the urge, and his various dim-witted, hawkish advisers know it.

The USA used NATO to extend its reach and conduct its oil wars in the Middle East. The moment it looked like it might have to pursue the actual remit of NATO it backed away while criticising others and making it all about money. It looks cowardly to me. The way Trump has become Putin’s puppet ought to embarrass every American.

Venezuela? A basket case of corruption and communism shouldn’t rob the capitalist, self-proclaimed World Police next door and expect that nothing will happen, nor be surprised when the people and the international community have little sympathy with the country’s dictator. His kidnapping does set a dangerous precedent though.

You would have thought that every American would be embarrassed (by a whole multitude of Trump's actions) but a fairly sizeable number of them would probably cut their own dicks off if they thought it was what he wanted.

On a similiar note, where did the somewhat vocal pro-Trump BCFer's go??? That camp seems to have quietened down a tad!

I've been pro-Trump because "embrace the chaos" and jeez-louise! has he delivered Laughing

With regards to repeating history, the fall of 'Murica parallels the fall of the Roman Republic. And what happened after that, boys and girls?

Dunno. I think WE (Britain) were the Roman empire. Which kind of slowly collapsed under its own weight and fractured. So is this the dark ages of religious intolerance and petty empire building?

Hopefully then there comes an enlightenment?
