Android Car Stereo SWC..

So I bought a cheap Android stereo for my Sprinter - Essgoo with supposedly 4G/64G memory configuration... I guess we'll see.

I then realised I'd need a new trim bezel and general wiring adapter.
(arriving soon hopefully) - this should allow the unit to work via the front panel..

..however the steering wheel controls (SWC) remain a bit of a mystery.

It has two wires (sw1 and sw2) which I think support older analogue control (each vehicle control button presents a different resistance and the unit can 'learn' which button is pressed).

The Sprinter though has a CAN bus interface I think- therefore it would seem to suggest that a CAN bus to analogue/resistive converter is needed..

..and yet these head units also have a CAN bus set-up menu implying that they have a CAN bus interface already!!

You can find full adapter harnesses on line (about 80 quid) for the sprinter and these include a 'CAN Decoder' but since thats only just
a bit less than I paid for the unit I'll survive without.

Question is - are the decoders really needed if you only want say volume control? If so can I hack a generic one? The myriad of Youtube videos only show how to access the CAN set-up menu on the unit.

I wouldn't bother unless it will give you some real advantage.
I have SWC on my van and its connected to the Sony stereo
but I've never bothered to seriously use it, I find it more annoying then useful.
Being able to BT link my phone,tablet, ear buds to the stereo on long trips is more useful IMO

I use SWC all the time.

Changing channels, skipping tracks, volume controls without taking your eyes off the road.

No downside to it - you can still use the manual/touch controls on the unit.

Update: I bought a super cheap CAN bus decoder from 'OnBuy'..

Will it arrive? will it work?

I can tell you're breathless with anticipation - as am I!

The cheap CAN bus decoder loom arrived (actually over a week ago)

What can I say other than 'BINGO!' . Inspite of it not being promoted as compatible (with Sprinter, only Vito) it works like a charm and there are direct connections from the Essgoo Android head unit to the Mercedes Quadlock connector. About the only thing I've yet to wire up is the factory microphone which come vis its own micro SMA connector..

Steering wheel controls work as does the supplied USB DAB+ module, I already had a separate rear mirror display for the reversing camerabut that is also now plugged in to the Essgoo.

The CAN decoder loom - £15 shipped
Dumb loom Quadlock to ISO - £9 and now going spare..
