Left wing or Right wing via Motorcycle parking.

Bit of an odd question here, can you say if a Council is left wing or right wing via motorcycle parking charges?

If you go back to the late 70's and 80's a lot of motorcycle training was done via the Star Rider Scheme. They would often train you to test standard and then after train you to achieve the Star Rider Scheme certificate.
Although it was run by the Motorcycle trade it was heavily subsidised by local councils who allowed the use of schools and other areas with large open spaces to be used for free and in London at least you could register for it through your local council especially if it was a Labour Council.
Cost to the rider was minimal as it was so heavily subsidised so was easy for low income people to get licensed.

Councils like Camden, Islington and Hackney, all loony left councils at the time were very forward thinking and invested time and staff in motorcycle training but it tailed off by the beginning of the 90's.
A year or so ago Islington introduced Motorcycle parking charges, Hackney did it late last year and Camden are looking at doing it this year, all have admitted they want to discourage commuter motorcycling in their boroughs.
This was particularly shocking as Hackney allowed free motorcycle parking in residents bays, Islington provided free secure bays and Camden had likely the largest amount of free secure bays in London and even had a scheme to subsidise ground anchors on private properties as well as you being able to request them on your estate.

Islington won't be offering Business permits for Motorcycles, Camden does (after a lot of arguments) at a cost of £419.10 a year and Hackney the cost for a 500cc bike for 12 months is £453.

So the question is have these councils which I believe are still Labour run become right wing in their actions of charging a minority while still claiming to be left wing? Afterall, commercial greed is not something within Left wing ideology.

Lefty councils seem to hate private vehicle ownership, hence why we're seeing LTNs, the reduction of parking and introduction of restrictions everywhere, and traffic planning which seems to focus on forcing everyone onto the same congested roads.

I can understand that but its more the oddity of charging more for motorcycle parking than for car parking that confuses the issue for me.

On my way to work i have for perhaps the last 20 years stopped off once a week at Home Bargains.

I have always left my bike near the front of the store as to not waste a car space. Today I received a parking charge for £60.

So it seems in future I will just take up a car space.

Motorcyclists are trouble. Motorcyclists don't pay as much as car drivers.

Motorcyclist are (just) a bit more acceptable than reform. (but not much).

The old Star Rider Scheme, That was brilliant in it's day. Those little things that they taught still stick in my mind 40++ years later.

I now park my bike in a car space unless it's convenient for me to do otherwise. I get dirty looks and the odd comment about spaces are for cars, but as my bike is almost the size of a car with full luggage on. As for paying, many carparks require you to display a ticket in the window, bikes can't do that, nor can they do reg plate recognition as they require a front reg plate.
