Wife is finally letting me back on bike, but not allowed my previous stuff.

So going for a sumo.

Kind of torn between a Wr450 and DR.

Any opinions?
My commute is nearly 40mile each way.

40 mile commute on a Supermoto? I’d rather get the train!

I wouldn't choose one for commuting 40 miles. When I had one I hated commuting on it and it absolutely sucked on dual carriageways. Lots of fun on short rides though.

Sadly they ripped the track up between Louth and Grimsby years ago.
Which is unfortunate for me, since part of the station is where my back garden is.

Get the smallest capacity non supersport bike you can find with a full fairing and fit a top box and heated grips. I'd suggest a Ninja 400 or similar. Tell your wife it's not the same as whatever you used to have.

My wife see's the slab side as 'too fast'.
Still have the 650 in garage but again she thinks it is too fast.

This is the same lass wbo 8yr ago went on my Tuono and when a asked if was going to fast she said:

'I was looking at the pretty flowers going by'.

Supermotos can get you in just as much trouble as anything… but at least with a ninja 400 you can have weather protection and comfort.

Educate her.

What's your previous stuff?

You're a bit of a sail on an SM/Enduro bike, and there's no weather protection, not sure I'd fancy one for the daily commute. But you can make almost anything work if you want to.

I did a commute on my ktm Duke 690, that was horrific. Cant imagine doing 40 miles on that every again.

Having one as a toy, cool, but nah for a commuter.

I'd go with a 690 variant for that distance. But only if I had a car for shitty days.

However, I do 20miles to work and then home the same (dual carriageway, sweepy country roads and awkward country roads through villages) and I've had as much fun on a vstrom 650 as any bike.
These include husky 701, tracer 700, gsxs 1000, scrambler 1200, vstrom 1050 and a hornet 900. It has big tank, comfort, handling and good weather protection. Versys 650 was also on my shopping list, but loaded with extras they just cost more.
I love supermotos and would get another 701 tomorrow as I have the car for shitty days.

You can pick up a Vose ADV 600cc with loads of extras for 6K brand new. They are great bikes as a few friends have got them.

We do have a car, but with 2 teenagers and a new born. A BMW 1series is a bit small, plus the amount we actually need 2 cars is minimal.

I'd still be mainly in car for work, purely because of the amount of work gear I have to carry (different sites).

Just once or twice when she needs the car, or is a nice evening (work nights), plus my commute is through rural Lincs.

Very good bike. Just ignore the scooter haters (it's an NC750 in different clothes)

Having used a drz on a regular basis, along with many other 400-450s, on road they do struggle at nsl. Having once had a day on an xr650sm I think the modern alternatives are amazing (very naughty, but tech can help keep your licence clean!).
