My XJ6n has just done 24k miles and at 13 years old is still running well but is showing signs of age. I'm tempted to just chuck it in as a trade in and get a new bike or keep but if I'm going to keep it then it really needs it's valve check done and if I was going to do that then may as well do an overhaul. So what to do? If I trade in I'll undoubtedly get a crap price and watching bike sales locally bikes don't seem to shift quickly. Also there's not a lot of choice at local dealers and I'm not massively interested in much they have to offer. If I overhaul then just how much should I look at getting done beyond the valve check?

Cheers.

If you are still finding it does all you need may as well bite the bullet and do full service and the other bits.
It won't be worth much as trade in you could ask for a price but you may as well keep it anyway if that's an option. And look out for more youthful one to keep alongside.
Time will come when older bikes in good condition are very sought after.

What signs of age, mechanical or cosmetic? If it has good compression and does not burn oil, it is unlikely that there is anything wrong that can be corrected by an overhaul. Why incur that expense if you get no benefit? 24k miles is far short of the mileage that the engine would be showing significant wear.

In all likelihood, a valve adjustment and throttle body sync will bring your bike back to like-new performance.

I'll stick it through the MOT next month and see. I'll certainly get a new rear brake disc and the clutch is a bit stiff so maybe have the cable replaced.
