Got the hard drive out, and three sticks with 1GB each of DDR (is that RAM?) Dance!

Although I don't know what that will be any good for, as I don't think this sort of RAM fits into laptops Rolling Eyes

As it was bought in about 2005-6-7 or so, its probably pointless keeping it so I'm chucking the case out and left the motherboard in, fuck it. The local Steptoe might like it.

Its probably got a good graphics card but I am sick of poking about in its innards now, and to be fair I have learnt quite a lot about things I never got round to learning before.

*trundles off to look at adaptors with SATA-USB and AC power*
(apparently that is what I need... Thinking )

Crikey that's a bit flash. I have ordered the standard thing as I am not planning to do this on a regular basis.

have an abundance of tomatoes in the garden this year. made a tomato soup from scratch and its bloody delicious.

Nice one!

One of my mates who moved from London to Wiltshire is enjoying his second summer of vegetable garden success with lots of very nice tomatoes, and he brought me some potatoes and zucchini as well. I made a really yummy frittata with it.

I had to instruct him on the correct size of zucchini as I don't like them too big Laughing - but everything really did taste better.

He also gave me a squash but I think its one of those stupid white ones. I was hoping he had done the orange ones that taste more like pumpkin.

Apparently he's also doing aubergines, which is rather interesting as (when we were an item - years ago), he wouldn't even have known what one was, except his now-girlfriend is mostly vegetarian - so no doubt she had some input into the matter Laughing

Spirit restaurant in Amsterdam - food is priced by the weight of what you have on the plate.

You can have a plate of desert if you are a fat fcuk and pay for that or you can have a few nibbles and pay far less.

All you want to pay for buffet food is a concept more UK restaurants should get behind.

My gears are fully ground by my improving techie skills (mediocre to say the least but for a Boomer, I think I am doing okay)

I received the SATA thingie from Amazon this evening and have already rescued all the old stuff off my hard drive! Dance!

The old drive is all reformatted now, and the dusty old tower has been put out for the dustmen.

I know its not rocket science to most of you guys, but to me it was a big step in reclaiming my sanity.

Could I now use the reformatted hard drive as a spare storage space for - I dunno, baby pics of my grand daughter or something?

Yes - but it's old. Do NOT rely on it. You can spin it up from time to time and back things up to it but it should not be the primary or sole source.

You can have a GoogleOne account - 2Tb of cloud storage for < £10 a month, free if you've EE broadband and an EE mobile.

Other plans / storages are available.

Yes - but it's American. Do NOT rely on it. The place is being run by an educationally sub-normal, senile megalomaniac. There is a non-zero possability he could decide other countries using USAs tech is an unfair advantage and make the companies turn it off for other countries. Or decide to access the data stored within it and make use of it

Very serious people in very serious places are migrating their cloud starage (and software) away from the US.

I also remember being burned by photobucket. Paying a fairly small subscription for cloud storage and hotlinking of images. Then practically overnight they increased their fees a hundred-fold or closed/restricted accounts. Broke so much of ther internet in one move, there are web resources/blogs/howtos all over the place that now no longer work.

If we enter a Trumpocalypse then Amazon is f'd too. The whole world will see ripples beyond tech.

Banks, Food, deliveries, satnav, internet, emails, mobile phones you name it - we are all about 3 bad decisions that we have no control over from royally fcuked.

As far as backups go, there's a reason it's usually plural.

I have an older SATA SSD that does file history, another external 8Tb that has full multiple snapshots of that SSD plus what goes into GoogleOne and then there's GoogleOne.

There's also a Dell R900 with a 16TB MD1000 attached that i've got backups of all of the above on but that's only powered up periodically as it sounds like a swarm of helicopters under my desk and the electric bill is like running a decent shower.
