Pete Hegseth would have been in the SS, he’s that type of scary weirdo. This will be his gleeful doing, albeit with Trump’s approval. It will still have to go through the courts and thus give the shooter a stay of execution.

Marco Rubio and JD Vance are both on record as having criticised Trump way back, yet they’ve turned into snivelling creeps at the suggestion of powerful positions. When Trump has gone I wonder whether Vance in particular, predicted to be Trump’s successor, will change, or stick with this once (twice) election-winning formula. I think the nation might have had enough of Trumpism though.

It's like going back to the roman empire, it'll be fights to the death in a collaseum next.

I believe this would put the USA in a very short list of countries who carry out public executions along with Iran, North Korea, Somalia and Saudi Arabia. Even the Russians just take people quietly out the back and put a bullet in their head, they don't make a song and dance about it..

As PKD said. "The Empire never ended", anyway.

Curious to know the thinking behind that statement.
If Hasan were to file an appeal it would extend the process for years and a normal person might very well want to try. Jihadists, though, are desperate to get their 72 virgins and it would prove Hasan's claims that the US is a barbarous country. If he doesn't file an appeal it's unlikely the current administration wouldn't go ahead - this is a bunch of apes who thought that bringing Trump's idea of the Thunderdome to the White house lawn would be the height of culture.
At the rate things are going in this country it wouldn't surprise me if we saw a resurrection of the Inquisition.

If it does go ahead it wouldn't surprise me if it starts to turn the tables on the capital punishment brigade - hunting furry creatures may be the national pastime but watching someone get shot by a bunch of yahoos who'd be keen to see Hasan suffer would probably turn out to be more stomach churning than many think.

I wonder if they’ll just end up throwing the guy off a tall building. They seem to be heading that way.

JD Vance may have grown a tiny pair and raised an objection. Both he and Rubio were on record as having dissed Trump before selling their souls for a whiff of power. The USA post-Trump will be interesting as those two and others deny their complicity, and the successors have to try to salvage the USA’s international reputation.

Is it salvageable?
Because of the way the Electoral College is set up a small number of low education voters have outsize clout during elections. Their ignorance of world affairs/economics and a lot of other stuff combined with the memory retention characteristics of goldfish mean there's a good likelihood that, despite the objections of a majority number of voters, we could find ourselves with an equally moronic leader and bunch of sycophantic losers in charge again, if not in a couple of years then possibly the election cycle after that.
It would be nice to think that the USA will play nice on the global stage very soon but who the heck is going to trust them after the mess the current bunch of fuckwits have wreaked upon the globe (and much of their own population).
Do you trust them to change their ways and not revert back to Trumpism - it's not like it started with Trump, they haven't exactly had a great record of keeping their noses out from where it didn't concern them since WWII...

I can well understand why voters constantly disillusioned with establishment politicians would choose an apparently radical candidate and I don’t think a “low education” should make their vote any less valid. Reluctantly I’m a potential (and highly educated, though I could still be thick) Reform voter and while I don’t equate what they might do in the UK with Trumpism (because we are very different societies) I can see parallels in terms of a disillusioned electorate and a last resort.

Surely though, the MAGA crowd now know they’ve been failed again and I wonder where they turn next. Civil disobedience seems to be the only way, and I don’t mean riots, I mean a general withdrawal from civic responsibility; an even more selfish society.

If we assume JD Vance bids to be Trump’s successor will he try to take at least some of Trumpism forward or will he openly reject that history? I’d like to think for him either way is untenable and he’s finished, but who’s next? Will Trump’s eventual departure simply let the old guard back in unchanged, or will they have evolved in response? My hope for Reform is that they will provoke the latter in the UK, and then fade away. If they fail to achieve even that, then the aforementioned civil disobedience will follow, and I don’t want to see it.

As to the USA’s international reputation, I think Europe in particular has tolerated them for decades; the so-called WW2 “debt”, their occupation of European bases under the guise of “protecting Europe” when they’ve mostly just been launch pads for their oil wars in the Middle East, their dominance over the UN. Tolerance no more. Trump’s obvious alliance with Putin isn’t the worst of it, it’s the absence of any effective opposition to a Quisling president.

I do think the USA will be eyed with suspicion going forward and will have to work with the international community instead of riding roughshod over it. I hope so anyway.
