Starting to have a few problems when I've done a fair length trip on the bike.

I'll pull up, turn off the ignition, hit the kill switch. Still the engine purrs like a happy kitty. IT WON'T BLOODY STOP!!!

I think this may be a problem!

Only way i can stop the bugger it to put the choke on and flood the sucker!

Does it just keep running regardless, or will it splutter to a stop after a few seconds?

Silly question, but can you start it with the ignition and kill switch in the off position?

Wotcha.

Hmmm.

Does this only happen after a long run ?

If so, there's a good chance that it's 'running on' due to red hot carbon particles in the head acting as a 'glow plug' and igniting the fuel - hence the choke would stop it. My V W engine has a fuel cut off valve in the carb. to prevent this. { More common with two strokes, but the V W being air-cooled does tend to run hotter. }

Whip the head off and shift any carbon deposits that have built up - more commonly known as 'de-coke' the thing Mr. Green

Either something wrong with the switch or running-on as said before.

If it stops when you turn it off normally, then it is unlikley to be the switch.

I would stop my bike by stalling it out (hold brake on then let the clutch out with the bike in gear) rather then flooding it with the choke, flooding the engine will not do anything for the amount of carbon in there if that is what is causing the problem.

Another way of definativley checking if it is an electrical problem or a carbon problem would be the next time it sits there running with the switch off, whip off the plug cap (using something insulated, not your fingers) if the engine stops, the problem is electrical, if it does not, it is definatley coked up.

Once it stops it won't start again, but when i hit the kill switch and remove the key, it doesn't even splutter, just keeps running!

I've got it booked in for some work this Thursday, i'll get the guy to have a look.

I haven't a bloody clue what I'm doing on engines!
