Yamaha XT600 Tenere cant start

Hi Buddies

I got a yamaha XT600 tenere it only starts after an engine heat like 10k and only if you stsrt the engine right away, if it cools down forget it. In the morning it gives me lot of one leg exercise as I have to kick it 5 to 10 times before having it going.

also does anyone have a service manual pdf file? its a 1989 model

First thing to change is spark plugs chances are that will fix it, have a look at them while your at it, oily plugs would suggest electrical (ht leads e.t.c., scorched could mean fueling/air leak.... air filter might help too, check the choke is operateing properly..

There's always gummy carburettors to ruin your day. I'd take the carburettors off and strip and clean them, blowing compressed air through the jets. (Even a footpump is better than nothing) Be careful of rubber O-rings and seals, they may or may not need replacement. Has the problem come on particularly after switching onto reserve? If so, it's most likely to be blocked jets or fuel tap I'd say.

I got the bike with that problem, I've tried everything above without success, the only thing that I found is when am starting the bike there is no spark, when am kicking it its on full spark, and my cdi is new

Shafted battery then! The leccy starter is draining the battery too much and it wont spark, but kicking works.

Take the battery out, top it up with distilled water and give it a bloody good charge off a mains charger. Invest in a new battery whilst your at it.

Top tip for kick starting. Give it two kicks with the ignition OFF and no choke. Then turn the ignition on and full choke, then it should start after one or two kicks.
