Got my knee down...kind of!

Well, after an afternoons riding, my mate and I head back to his. Coming off the coast bound A2 heading to bluewater there's a nice bend. There I was doing about 30 on my little ER5 (I've been round it faster), for some reason I panicked, grabbed the front brake and start going wide, I get my hand off the brake but it's too late, hit the gravel laying around on the outer part of the bend and I'm off.

So, I got my knee down, bit it was rapidly followed my the rest of my left leg, them my right, then my chest, finishing off with grinding to a halt on my face!!

So, I now need the following:

Front mud guard.
New head shell for the clocks.
Yokes need re-aligning (along with forks)
Foot rest welding back on.
Mirrors.
Lick of paint.
New crash helmet.
New leather trousers.
New leather jacket.
New case for Nokia mobile phone. (It was in my pocket and ended up kissing tar mac too!)

Apart from a few scuff's I am OK, got up and walked away. The leathers did their job!

So, do I restore the bike to it's original state, or make some changes so I will enjoy riding again?

I dont really know to be honest, all I remember is grabbing a handful of front brake, letting go to regain control then losing it in a load of gravel. Crash, bang, wallop! The next thing I know I'm lying face down with my left foor pointing in a direction it shouldnt ( ) with 180Kgs of motorbike on top of me, covering me in petrol.

I smelt nice on the train home! hehehe

Sorry to hear about that lh! Stories like this always remind me to never touch the front when in a bend.

Get your self onto ebay and keep an eye on the stuff you need. I take it you didn't drop it on the right hand side? Otherwise the exhaust would be fudged.

I wouldn't weld the foot rest, if you ever go round a bend and lean enough to scrap the peg on the ground it might snap off.

LOL! Just recieved my order for new brake shoes, oil filter and front sprocket!

Whoops! Think I'll be ordering a few more parts now. Still, plenty of time to work on the whole bike now.

Your leathers really shouldn't need replacing after a 30mph off, if they do then what leathers are they? The eathers being scuffed doesn't mean they need replacing though.

I came off about 40 in Frank Thomas ones and they faired great. Some very minor battle scars but no holes. I was going to buy RST one's as well!

I think they took a battering because the grave at the side of the road was like train track ballast! Crap everywhere. I had a boot full of the stuff. Spotted various bike mirrors there, so think it's a bit of a black spot for it.

I have pictures of the state of the road. I'm tempted to complain to the local council. The roads around that area are a complete mess.

Sounds to me as if your bike's front wheel had lost grip as soon as you pulled the front brake lever. Releasing it after would have made no difference. Once you've lost grip you will never get it back.

Lesson to learn, you can't really brake in bends. By braking in a bend you will do two things in this order:

The first thing to happen is the bike will try and level itself, causing you to go wide.

The next thing (assuming you haven't already gone into the curb from the above) is the wheels will lose grip and slip. As soon as they do this all weight is removed from them and the grip cannot be re-gained. In short you are off

Under certain situations such as an emergency you can gently feed in a little back brake whilst in a bend... BUT take note, the objective here is not to slow down but level the bike a bit to allow maximum contact with the road. However you must remove this rear brake before any evasive action is taken as otherwise you will just keep the weight off the front wheel....

If you have a push (pedal) bike you can test the physics out for yourself. Hold the bike by the handle bars and gently move it in a curve whilst leaning it over... now hit the front brake and see how easily the front tyre slips out

The damage dosent look that bad. Any dammage on the rear pannels.

You can re-weld the foot peg, and get a new clock set from Ebay. Mudguard from Ebay. And sorted!

Whats the foot peg bracket made out of ?

If its steel then it would be fine to weld is one inch of weld can hold up to one ton in weight.

But...

If its ally then you got no chance of welding it.

I rode home with a seriously bent footpeg once, it's a really strange experience.

Having to move your whole leg up to change gear, rather than pivot around the footpeg.
