I am looking to buy my first helmet, Ive seen the cost of helemts range from £60 - £500+.
What major differences am I going to get from a cheap helemt compaired to an expensive one? surely both have to protect my head by law, so why pay so much extra?

Usually the the more expensive it gets the lighter the weight due to more up to date composite materials used in it's manufacture but still retaining it's strength. Also, the appeal of the cosmetic designs on the helmet adds to the value of it.

Many good quality helmets are now selling at half price because of the new range coming in and so bargains to be had out there.

Hi

Fit is the most important thing with a helmet. A £600 helmet that does not fit properly is useless compared to a £60 helmet that is a good fit. As such do not buy one mail order.

More expensive helmets tend to be lighter, have better finish, better visor mechanisms, last longer, fit better (they will change the shape of the head depending on the market they are selling them in) and lastly a flashy replica paint scheme.

All the best

Keith

I got my V-flyer reduced from £210 to £130 in HG simply because it was 'last years colour' Confused Although it says it is 'Advanced Composite Fibre', even fibre glass is a fibre composite. Laughing It isn't any lighter than the previous (nasty) £50 Nitro one I had, but the build quality is stellar in comparison.

The Nitro helmet had a vicious seam on the inside which gave me a headache until it was worn in. I had to wear the helmet for about 10 hours (off the bike) until it stopped giving me stinking headaches. It fit perfectly well otherwise.

The first time I wore it, the chin vent innards fell to pieces. It performed reasonably well when crashed in, it certainly saved my life. The visor simply vanished; I found a single sliver afterwards. I'm damned if I know what happened for the 40 minutes surrounding the accident, so who knows how it hit the road.

So yes, you pay more for the comfort and build quality. Oh, and the fact that it's sparkly. Mr. Green

I've had my n800v nitro for a while now and you can tell it's a cheap helmet.

As said in a post a while back the padding disappears after a few thousand miles and at continuous high speed the front of the helmet somehow digs in and produces a headache.

But sweet looking and best in black with black visor.
Definately saved my life a few times.

I realised the other day that I've had my Shoei for 2 years now, and it still fits nice and tight.

Considering that fact, and the fact that it weighs a fair whack less than any of my previous helmets, it was well worth the extra money I paid for it. Thumbs Up

Same here, my Shoei is just great! Still getting used to the extra sound proofing. It's way lighter than my old FM but it still done it's job.

Get yourself into a bike shop and try lots of different kinds on. I set my heart on an AGV but they just wouldn't fit my head. No in between from meduim to large.

I just spent £200 on an Arai Astro-J in a sale. My previous lids weren't bad (a Shark S600 and an X-lite x901), but this feels twice as good. You can tell where the money goes on an expensive lid.

Only problem is every time I put it on it rains Confused

Hi

Last 3 lids I have had have been Shoei ones.

Quality is fine generally. The mechanism to get the visor off is simple to use.

First one fitted well and had double D rings for the strap. Also seemed the quietest. 2nd one was a bit noisier and always put pressure on my forehead after a while. Fastening was a seatbelt type one (which I am not keen on) but was at least easy to undo. Latest one (a Raid) fits better but has a far worse seat belt type connector on the strap (very difficult to undo one handed).

A the MCN Skeggness event Shoei had a stand there doing free helmet services, so the visor on mine now fits correctly.

Shoei are also doing the pin lock system for their own type of Fog City clone. They were £15 fitted (could of pegs needed to be fitted to the visor). Charlotte has bought one so hopefully she can tell us how effective it is when compared to a genuine Fog City.

All the best

Keith

My X-lite had a pin lock system on it, however I found the top of the inner-visor was just where I was looking for any vaguely sporty riding, so it got annoying and I removed it. I guess it depends on where the posts are placed on the visor.

My Nolan lid has came with a pinlock system on the visor and I find it to be really useful. Over winter I just used the clear insert which came with it, which seemed to work very well as an anti-fog device. Now that we are starting to get brighter days I bought a stick-on tinted insert, trimmed it down to fit into the pinlock system and cut 2 small notches to allow it to fit into the pins. This makes it a doddle to take out should I need to without having to mess around re-sticking it in place each time.

Shoei fan myself Thumbs Up
The XR-1000's are lovely helmets. Can sell them 24/7 me, the new paint jobs are great. The diabolic 2 which comes out July ish time i believe ( Confused humm, must ask to make sure) is nice.

Oh Shoei as a company, they test each batch of 4000 helmets. 10 or so are chosen at random and tested, when i say tested they go under about three times over the necessary road legal limit. Needless to say Shoei have never had a failed batch Thumbs Up

Arai all the way for me,but generally if Arai fits you Shoei wont.
My first helmet was an FM which fit well and i thought was great at the time until i tried on an Arai. Since that day i've never owned anything else. Always buy last years colours you get a big discount on price and who needs the latest colour anyway its the protection you're after.

What's the general opinion of those flip up full face lids? the one i'm thinking about in particular has a sun visor built in underneath the clear safety visor. can't remember what the name of it is though Rolling Eyes
