well want it is i am 19 and currently training to be an accountant but it's not for me. i want too train to be a bike mechanic preferably or both car and bike mechanic. as all i think about all day is bikes.
i was wondering if anyone here has done this or is doing it at the moment, and could they give me any info on how they went about it. also what kind of wage they are getting if you want to share that, as ive got a loan to pay for.
any info would be much appreciated as my head is all over the place at the moment because i just don't know what to do.
thanks phill.

I'm not too sure how much mechanics get, but I think it would be something like £17 - 20k.
If you are good at maths & prepared to go without money for 3 years you could go and study a motorcycle engineering degree, you could end up with a wicked job then!
I know Swansea institute do a good course. However I wouldnt recommend living in Swansea!!
If not then get down to your local college, I am sure they would do suitable courses.

I did a year working as a car apprentice for Volkswagen, i was earning around the £6k mark... was good fun, lots of hard work though! Its not all "stick a spanner there, and put this bit there and it'll work" Razz Lots of theory and homework at college.
My time there was up and down but i do highly regret leaving the scheme.
So good luck Thumbs Up hope this post might be some use to you.

yeah it is mate thanks Thumbs Up
the college work bit doesn't bother me at all, i can't wait to do it because doing what i am now it like being at school and its boring. i was going to do this from school but money wise sent me towards accounting which i regret.

There are times where the apprenticeship will feel like being back at school also. Depending on the scheme you will be doing either day release (1 day a week to your local college, which is great because you get a day off work, Payed! Thumbs Up ) or like i was, doing a 2 week block release to a college in another part of england, i did mine at luton college. And although the lessons were different, it was like being back at school, just with teachers that swear and laugh with ya Razz

I did the foundation year at swansea institute, I just found that swansea was 1 big concreate council dump, welsh chavs everywhere, I was stupid enough not to look round first, if I were you I would have a look round now before its too late. The institute itself isnt too bad, abit underfunded, I hated wales though, hence left after the first year. Dont make the mistake (I did!

Oh and before people start moaning coz they live in swansea and they think its gr8...its not! you just havnt been anywhere else!
To give you a typical example... my girlfriend came to stay with me for a few days, and she decided to walk into town while i was at uni.
On her way she saw some 8yr old chav kid standing on his wall, pissing into his neighbours garden!! when he spotted my girlfriend he said ''alright love? fancy a shag?''
I rest my case.

Very Happy Very Happy

Just being hospitable...lol (j/k) Mr. Green

Yup, pretty much what you get around here. It isn't too bad in places, although, I have to agree on the whole, its crap here. Mr. Green

Back to the thread, I have been giving a lot of thought to doing a motorcycle mechanic course. I don't have the aptitude for numbers to become an engineer but I would love to be able to know more about motorcycles and the way they work, to satisfy my interest and give a great level of confidence when I'm around bikes.

Thanks for the info about Swansea University, I have heard of a 12 week course running in September sometime, I haven't the info to hand but I have heard about it.
