M4 Speed cameras spark protest group

News: For immediate release

Wiltshire and Swindon Camera Partnership’s rollout of speed camera vans on the M4 has triggered a new drivers’ road safety protest group. Called simply 'M4 Protest' (www.m4protest.org), they plan a slow drive protest along the M4 through Wiltshire on Saturday 30th April.

M4 Protest hopes this action will show the driving public's dissatisfaction with speed cameras in the run up to the general election, and show that safe driving is too complex to be measured in miles per hour.

Campaign founder, Robin Summerhill said: "After £700 million pounds of speed camera fines, road deaths are going up, yet the greedy camera partnerships simply keep expanding, placing more and more cameras. The motoring public is at breaking point and something has to give. I believe it is important that the entire ethos of speed cameras in the UK is re-examined from the very foundations."

Drivers and motorcyclists will be gathering at 10am on Saturday 30th April 2005 at two motorway service stations - one in the east of Wiltshire and one in the west. People wanting to join the protest should visit www.m4protest.org for news or information about how to join in.

Robin continues: " We've been running for less than 24 hours and already the response is amazing. I hope drivers and riders will turn out in big numbers on the day. Speed cameras are an issue that affects road users everywhere. Let's hope that the politicians get the message - we're not going to stand for it any more.

It's weird but part of me thinks that this is just the sort of thing that 'those in power' want drivers/riders to do.

They will sit there on their smug arses thinking "Well, that's taught them a lesson, they are all keeping to the speed limit now, and they are pissing off the other road users! Ha Ha the fools!"

A bloody minded part of me would like to see all those people involved in the go slow breaking the speed limit. Just by, maybe, 5-7 mph. If this was done by, say 3000 cars a day every day, they just wouldn't be able to enforce it. Especially if they all refused to pay the fines, resulting in clogging up the court system.

This will not happen though, for obvious reasons.

Bastard cameras. If only they could follow the twats that drive like muppets and put others lives at risk by their bizzarre, unpredictable and downright dangerous excuse for driving skills. If only they could follow them, record the evidence, pull them over and fine them or maybe confiscate their lethal weapons, if only......

What if, and yes, I know this is a radical thought, what if there were police patrol vehicles?
A human, that could judge whether lives would be at risk?

The trouble is, despite the fact that essentially installing a speed camera is the same as paying for a policemans wages for a year, they've already wasted all that money on the cameras so will use the lack of money as an excuse for not to have police.
