Well... went to the garage to see if they had sorted my bike out (ZXR400) and it turns out that a conrod had shot out. Anyway the engine in screwed Crying or Very sad

Now I'm thinking of turning it into a project bike. Maybe stick a 600 engine in it (maybe even bigger)

I've heard of this being done but can't remember what engines they were. Anyone know what engines will fit, without any (or much) modification. And how much do you think this project will cost?

Thanks in advance.

I have heard of blade engines being used aswell, would probably be a pain in the mud flap to do but oh what fun once it's all running.

I might even just put another ZXR400 engine in there I guess. Anyone know where I could pick one up from? There's none on ebay at the moment.

Hi

Chances are a ZZR6 engine would fit without too many problems, but anything from another bike maker / era is likely to be far more difficult.

However expect to do without an airbox and get an exhaust made up. Also expect endless servicing hassles, and problems with the routing of small things like water pipes.

All the best

Keith

I blew my old ZXR400 engine and thought about sticking a ZZR6 in there in its place, but when I drew up a list of parts and mods needed to the frame etc... I decided against it.

I ended up sticking an exact replacement in there, must less hastle, although a bit of a pain doing it on your own with a trolly jack! Confused

Hunt around breakers yards for an engine. Club bike meetings might also be worth a look, sometimes you can pick up stage 1/2 engines very cheap in the padock.
Then there is of course Ebay!

hey,

Barry, since you've done this before, could you please tell me if there's anything else apart from the engine itself that i'm likely to need? Will I need gaskets, etc??

And DaFrostyOne, cheers for the info. You say sometimes you can pick up cheap engines in the padock? Do you have any numbers etc please??

Cheers for the help, guys.

It depends on what you buy! If you get a complete running engine then its just a straight swap, plug everything in, top up the fluids and off you go.

If your missing side covers etc.. on the new engine and need to put your covers on off the old engine, then you may need gaskets (cant honestly remember!). Rocker cover gasket shouldn't really be re-used if the rocker cover has been off so I'd get one of those. To be honest, you need to know what the replacement engine is like and what it comes with, then make a shopping list of what you need before you start the job.

Also, when you think your ready to lower the engine out, do it an inch at a time, there will always be a connector or hose you've not removed!

ps - Remember to keep you old 'blown' engine as a source of spares and not let the garage keep it or any bits off of it! They might offer to 'dispose' of it for you!

Oh, you'll need exhaust gaskets. Wink
