high speed crashes you generally come off then slide to safety and hope you don't go into oncoming traffic of or a curb but slow speed (as in 30mph) you get mangled up in the bike and go where the bike goes often under it.
who's had crashes at both speeds? how did you come off (injury wise)?
this is low speed (30mph) crash:

Elbow xray

elbow after surgery:

this is what he was wearing on that 30mph crash:
"2-piece Alpinestars leathers, full-face lid and Sidi Vertebrae boots.
Also severed an artery in his arm and nearly bled to death."
manhole covers caused that crash btw so no-one to blame except for the road condition.
Kind of a warning for you to wear the proper leathers and helmet ____________________ -=[Sam/b]=- cx500's the only way to travel, we do it in style just like jimmy saville

btw a friend of mine came out of a car windscreen with his missus recently at 75mph, he almost lost his leg but only because it got trapped in the steering wheel, his missus was fine if you dont count the cuts and minor broken bones. But they kind of slid to safety and thats without leathers.
I notice people are voting high speed but think about that for a second ____________________ -=[Sam/b]=- cx500's the only way to travel, we do it in style just like jimmy saville

It's an unlucky case. I fell off somewhere between 30 and 40 but managed to hold on all the way down till I was right at the road then let go (can't remember this but wishaykillie behind me said I was still on till I was at road level). Bounced a bit and landed in the ditch!
The guy was really unlucky actually. ____________________ Old bikes >>> https://www.bikepics.com/members/cc123/ |

No I'm sorry, but it was 99.9% his fault. I'll allow the 00.01% just in case there was absolutely no way of avoiding the manhole cover.
Saying it's the covers fault is like saying "I hit the curb at the side of the road, not my fault the curb was there" It's a part of the road, it's a part of the road we all know about, it's something he should have avoided.
Anyway, pet hate sorted now, back on topic..
That injury looks like it is mostly down to the impact. The kit he was wearing wont have helped much at all. Imagine going outside fully kitted out with the best kit you can buy, and standing on a 40mph road. Do you really think it'll make much difference? The helmet will help your head, but the leathers wont do anything except hold the bits in. The kit is there to save your skin when sliding, not to make you invincible.
I think the speed issue is more down to where you are. If you're travelling at 30mph, chances are you're in the middle of a city with lots of traffic around, so yea, you're more likely to be injured seriously in an accident. If you're doing 160mph, chances are everything is clean, and an accident would involve you falling off and sliding.
Hitting a car at 30mph will hurt less than hitting it at 160mph providing everything else stays the same (no hitting other objects, and hitting the car in the same place etc.).
Sorry for the long post, just wish some people would take more responsibility for their accidents/riding and wouldn't rely on their kit to save them. |

i've come off a pedal bike at 35mph when i was a kid (I can remember looking at the speedo before coming off going down a reeeally steep hill), was kinda funny my handlebars just come off in my hands and I remember holding them up thinknig wtf for a few seconds before i went over the top (lose bolt) all I ended up up with was cuts. I think if you ever come off at low speed if you make sure you don't go with the bike, maybe even chuck yourself away from the bike if you know your coming off you'll be fine.
that crash was from being taken along with the bike. ____________________ -=[Sam/b]=- cx500's the only way to travel, we do it in style just like jimmy saville

I had typed up a nice response to say that high speed crashes are obviously more dangerous, just less common, but IE crashed and lost it.
I've not crashed at speed, but of the four times I have binned it/ fallen off/ something, only one of them has given me any injuries, and that was (probably - I know nothing about it) sub 30 mph.
https://www.bikechatforums.com/download.php?id=5453
Broken wrist - very swollen.
https://www.bikechatforums.com/download.php?id=5452
Fractured top end of radius too, not displaced though.
https://www.bikechatforums.com/download.php?id=8777
The wrist after surgery and about 3 months healing.
Add severe concussion and unconciousness to those and it was reasonably nasty, though entirely my own fault and could have been worse. Having binned it twice, all I got from those was a scuffed boot and a sore hip, being stuck under the bike on the ground almost before I'd even fallen over. ____________________ I must not be a troll...

you tend to find that both will have the same effect, if you come off at high speeds you just slide along till you slow down, then when ure leathers get a grip of the ground you'll probably start doing damage to yourself. Slow speed crashes are the same, except you dont slide first. Out of the offs ive had i'd have to say high speed is the best, simply because i got my leg trapped under my bike at slow speeds and at high speeds i got chucked clear of it. It all depends on the situation ____________________ Will work for petrol

sit their and fall with the bike if you want, if you can push away and get an inch that could be the difference between losing your leg or not. you may get a foot away from the bike, an inch, 2 foot or nothing but you don't sit and topple over with the bike. Bit hard on a corner when your already half way to the ground obviously. Don't see the confusion? ____________________ -=[Sam/b]=- cx500's the only way to travel, we do it in style just like jimmy saville

not saying anything other than you do it and hope, i'm not saying you leap off do a star jump then land and roll and all is fine, you just do it. lol pushing away whilst your falling and making a conscious effort to do it or moving out of the way might be a better phrase than pushing is not the same as leaping off your bike or as you said 'jump off'. exhausted shoosh now lol ____________________ -=[Sam/b]=- cx500's the only way to travel, we do it in style just like jimmy saville

I did just have a thought... Both times I binned it, it was due to instinctive use of the front brake whilst leant over, once on a wet roundabout and once on gravel (I know it was stupid, but I'd only been riding for about a fortnight in total.. ) Do you get much more time if you lose the rear instead? Or will losing the rear just too often mean you're about to be flipped off into the scenery? ____________________ I must not be a troll...
