Ticking

hey guys.

niticed a 'ticking' coming from the engine of my FZR600...
it's not that chain, that's the right tension and lubed.
it's only when i accelerate, (tick....tick..... tick..tick.tick.tick) gets faster with the higher revs.

but it doesn't hinder the performance. any ideas on what it could be? and how easy to fix?

if it was valve clearance, wouldn't it make a contant tick sound? (btw the odometer reads 29600 miles, if that's any help)

i get this on me car all the time and have had it on me bike, what ive found it to be is a stone wedged in the tread of the tyre. It bugged me for weeks untill i found what it was. Dunno if this helps??

it does it, when the bikes not moving just after 4k revs, and stops at about 8-9k revs

It could be a loose engine mounting bolt or something resonating too of course. It needn't be anything wrong with the engine at all.

Is it louder when the engine is cold and slightly quieter when warm? if so its probably valve clearances.
if it is the same constant noise hot or cold its probably either a stuck camchain tensioner or a well worn camchain .
easy way to find it is to get a big screwdriver push the handle against your ear and put the blade end against the engine , move it around till you get the loudest noise and you can tell where your rattle is coming from (this method has worked loads for me over the years)
or alternitivley you could use a stethescope if you have one.

Totally unhelpful, but funny. I have heard of people putting stones in car hubcaps to make it sound like there is a problem with the car. A constant rattling noise can get you quite worried. I guess it was used as a revenge tactic!

Might be worth getting your valve clearences done, might be worth it even if thats not the problem, a couple of mine were way out (6 valves alltogether!), because they are so akward to do i dont think they have been for a loooong time, as such the bike is now at least 25% more powerfull than it was! i.e. before it would have to be ragged to get me and passenger up a hill, now it does, with ease at far lower revs..

Ive also found that theres a tiny crack in the exhaust causeing a backfire poping/click accelerateing but louder on the over run... could be that?

Camchain is one, try reving it high and letting the throttle go, listen close to the engine and you might hear a cluter of loose chain slaping, i'm assumeing its an auto tensioner, not something to leave to go wrong

If it dissapers after warming up it could be an oil pump chain (if it has one)

Go arround the engine mountings with a torque wrench and check them...

A long time ago on my cg i was horrified by a loud clicking noise that only occoured between certain revs... turned out it was my keys


So many things it could be, take it to a trusted mechanic and ask them to have a listen... even then its still not more than a guess.. one of the problems with seccond hand bikes is not knowing what maintainance has been done/not done!

Sounds like one valve has a tad too much clearance. My dads BMW engine gets this when its hot, ticks quietly over about 4,500 revs. Check theres no bolts loose fist though, as it can make you look a total prat.
