I managed to come off my bike on Saturday in an incident involving loose gravel, a muddy ditch, and I'm told it was a 9.8 scoring, legs in the air, dive.

The upshot of this is that I managed to damage my shoulder and I'm wondering if anyone else has had a similar injury or knows roughly how long it takes to heal.

Once it was obvious I couldn't keep riding I got a one armed pillion ride to the hospital for xrays. After attending the fracture clinic the next morning I was told I'd caused sub-cutaneous damage to the CV joint. Apparently it's similar to a dislocation but they can't just pop it back in because the muscle is damaged (and making a lump on my shoulder). My arm is misaligned by about an inch or so from my shoulder.

They gave me a special sling that keeps it all immobile and some painkillers that have now run out. The pain is still unbelievable when my shoulder moves, especially getting out of bed Sad

Any doctors out there or people who've done the same ? How long am I looking at until I get some movement back and how long until I can ride again ?

My mums a nurse and gets alot of bikers in with injuries like this. Problem is soft tissue injuries take ages to heal. Only option is to wait it out. I did a similar thing to my ankle and I still feel it 3 years later when I'm running or turning quickly. It took 6 weeks for the swelling to go down and 8 for my ankle to return to it's normal colour.

Brick Wall Bugger, I missed your dive by about 2 seconds!!! Laughing

My mate had the exact same injury. He was about 5-6 weeks if I remember right before it was nearly healed although he dragged that and his other injurys out to get 3 months off work. He was back on a bike again after about 2 months.

Dr S. Jam says :

The healing process takes a varying length of time for different people. It all depends on your muscle, if you are fairly fit and muscular - i.e. your muscles are used to repairing themselves regularly after exercise then it will heal more quickly (it's also more painful too, apparently, but he would say that - he says injections hurt muscly people more too Rolling Eyes ).

Get yourself some ibruprofin, which as long as you are not asthmatic won't do you any harm at all.

I hope you are feeling better swiftly. And Thumbs Up for the dive... brilliant Very Happy Very Happy

It was quite spectacular. I was right behind him. Shocked Thought he was trying to do a handestand on the handlebars.

You could possibly try something on here:

https://www.orthoseek.com/articles/shouldersep.html Although I'm sure one handed typing is a complete pain in the arse Sad

Yikes, sounds like I've done it properly and got the grade III shoulder seperation since there was some debate about surgery...and it being no better than immobilisation and rest.

Thanks for all your congratulations on the dive. Maybe when I'm healed we can do an accident reconstruction for the benefit of those that missed it Rolling Eyes

And yes, the one handed typing is a real pain. Stuck at home, all week, on my own, and it's my RIGHT arm I can't use Confused

Well if you're bored and sick of typing with one arm, you could always have a play about with a voice recognition package. Never actually got one working very well mind you.

surely anti-inflammatories would be a good idea, did the hospital really not give you any? something like ibubrufen, you can buy that yourself from asdas or somewhere - two 400mg's should see you good for a few hours, works great for the inflamation and the pain in my knee's.

I was referring to the typing part he wrote. Never read it thoroughly enough to see the end bit though. Poor bloke. Laughing

I dislocated my arm 7 times, and then after about a year of having a loose joint had an operation to correct it, December 2004.

My arm was pretty useless for about a month and a half,in the sling and very painful. Its now been 4 months, and i can use my arm for pretty much anything, but no heavy lifting/sports etc as the joint is just too weak.
I just started swimming last week, (breast stroke only,no overarm action allowed) and i can already feel the benefits.
My arm wont be fully repaired until december 2005, when ill finally be allowed to do over arm sports like tennis/front crawl swimming.
Hopefully the joint will stop squeaking by then too Shocked (my shoulder squeaks like a old wooden chair when i move it sometimes...is very loud and horrible Sad )

Sadly mate id say that if its a bad injury you may be out of action for a long while. However if your bike doesnt have to much of a sporty riding position, it wont put that much pressure on your shoulders and you'll be able to ride again within 3 months.

If your lucky like me you will get a fit physio Razz. Do everything the physio says and you will be well on your way to recovery.

Just dont let it get you down mate. Take ibuprofen and paracetamol at teh same time (you are allowed) and it will help ALOT with the pain/swelling.
Hope you get better soon mate.

Yeah, my bike's more easy rider than power ranger so maybe a little bit easier to get back on.

It can take up to 6 months for a soft tissue injury to heal especially one of such a major joint. However as many people have said one here, if you are a fit guy and do what the Dr's have told you and get some physio you could be ok after 6-8 weeks. You can take 2 paracetomol 500mg and up to 600mg of Ibuprofen with food at the same time. And you can take them every 4 hours. No more than 8 paracetomol in one day though. You can also use antiinflammatory gel at the same time to rub on the injury.

Ice and heat work well. Place a bag of frozen peas wrapped in a tea towel over the site for about 20 minutes. Then after another 30 minutes get into a warm shower and let the heat get on the injury. This has an effect of reducing swelling but then encouraging the blood flow which will in turn speed up the healing process.

if you are still experiencing pain then go back to your GP and ask for some more analgesia ( Pain killers) There are some stronger antiinflammatories that you can get and also he may be able to tell you how long you need to take it easy for... Have you got a review or physio organised? Are you back in work?

Thanks Ickle-Ninja. They gave me Ibuprofen at A&E, then Co-codimol 30/500 at the fracture clinic the next day. They were good but ran out yesterday Sad Using Solpadeine Max now and taking more Ibuprofen.

I've been off work all week. Going to go back when I can get about a bit better and don't have to take painkillers all day. Pestered the doctor about an appointment but they're calling me back today with an update...hopefully, they've not called yet Confused

Commiserations mate, did a similar injury to my shoulder (although less severe - no subluxation) last wednesday, and it was excruciating turning over in bed for several days - slept like crap until early this week.
The pain should get better within a couple of weeks, but healing can't be rushed i'm afraid.
There are stronger cocodamols than solpadeine max around, with nearly 3 times the amount of codeine in, although they are prescription only. Remember you can take full doses of both cocodamol (whether solpadeine or another brand) and full dose ibuprofen together.

*edit* ah, someones already given all that advice.. oh well, it's the thought that counts Very Happy

Di-Hydro Codeine. Confused Effective stuff, but it screws your head about and gives you horrible constipation.

Just make sure you keep it as motionless as possible mate. It will try and sublux (dislocate) at any chance it gets whilst the muscles are still stretched/damaged.
If you can,get a sling with a waist strap, as it keeps the arm still and tight to the body.
You will look like a knob, but not using it is what caused my repetetive dislocations.......too bothered about my image to listen to the physio Mad

If you cant get hold of one, i can send you a spare one of mine in the post, i have no need for it anymore.
Best to let it heal properly and well, rather than thinking its repaired quickly and let it fuck up again. My life has been ruined for the last year or two because of my shoddy weak shoulder.

I cant emphasise how much you should give it the full time to heal, let me know if you want that sling Smile

Finally got my sick line for work. I've been in Glasgow for years but never been ill so hadn't registered with a GP here...and can't ride or drive to my old GP because of the injury. I've got another three weeks off work after this week then a reassessment, but he did give me a script for lots of co-codimol for the pain.

My work are not very amused by this. Talking to my manager today and he's wanting me to do lots of work at home...despite me only having my left arm and being a bit spaced on the pain killers.

Off to the fracture clinic again this afternoon. It's begining to feel a bit more stable but still very easy to move it slightly and end up in extreme pain.
