CBR400RR deemed death trap, What sports 6?

I am after an Idea for a sports 600. My mum and dad will be helping me come up with the dosh, and I will be looking on tuesday. Favourites at the mo are the CBR6RR, ZX6-R(unregistered 04model), and also the R6 of course. The R6 has always been my favourite, however I am starting to like the lines on the 6rr.

Looking at a V reg fairweather R6 on tuesday, with the crash bungs and Akrapovic end can. I also know that parts for this are easier to obtain on ebay.
Could also be a CBR600F1(52 reg) this seems very expensive at £4799 for a 7,000 miler.

Any reccomendations wuld be appreciated.

The 400 had the fairing tear off doing 70mph on the way to MOT. And the bike doesnt run properly either, so I am bidding it farewell, and probably breaking and selling on ebay.

600s untill you can ride properly.

I had an R6 when I was 18.. nice bike but a bit too tarty, wish I'd bought a CBR600RR now as they are a lot smoother and have a better front end.. MY r6 was very skitchy, not sure if all are like this or if it can be sorted, but I never had any confidence in the front end (unless I had a pillion, then it was fine!) However, these days I'd prob get the ZX-RR...! all good bikes, just test rides and go for the one you like the most.

The 03 R6 is much better than the pre 03 models. Would your budget stretch to a newer one?

The CBR600F is a very good machine and very comfortable. It was my first bike. The RR is a completley different bike and a lot more modern. The CBR600F has not really been developed since the RR came in.

Don't listen to jealous people who don't want you to have a better bike than them. Get what you want.

I know what you mean Yams. I found that with new tyres the bike was amazing but they did seem to go off quickly and the front end feel did suffer.

Well I should be able to stretch to a newer bike if needby, just borrow more from my folks. I am an R6 man really, so I aint sure about what bike to get, as the magazines all say that the R6 is dated.

Dont like the GSXR's so much! 750, and new 1000 are great, but 600's it wouldnt be my first choice.

The CBR600F I mentioned was supposed to be the 600FS1 model, on a 52 plate. The fuel injected 600!

I am edging towards the CBR6RR and the ZXR6-RR.

For around £3k you can pick up a good condition ZX6R, look at the 1998 onwards models. Threre are plently of choose from with the price closer to £2k than £3k and if you're wanting to spend a bit more then when you start looking towards £4k there are lots of very tidy ones.

I wouldn't base your decision on what magazines have said, get what bike you're wanting as you're the one who'll be riding it.

Look more towards the £2k bikes rather than £5k bikes.

Just for reference, I paid £2700 for my 1999 ZX6R, 12k miles, FSH, totally standard except Hugger and Scottoiler (Which in my eyes hopefully meant it was less thrashed)

If it was new I'd go for the CBR600RR, But I think around 1999/2000 the R6 was probably the best all out track-style bike and the CBR600/ZX6R were good alrounders but bottle line theres very little between any of them performance wise, Get the one which looks best to you

I'd ignore what differences the magazines think there are, I doubt many people'd notice anyway, and all of them should be fast enough. The people writing the magazines ride every piece of exotica they can get their hands on, so you can never be quite sure about how fair or otherwise they're being in their appraisals.

Yeah,it's funny how a bike handles one year then a year later it hasn't changed(but the others in the class have) and suddenly it handles like a shopping trolly

Yams,it's funny that your R6 handled better with a pillion,mines horrible with more weight over the back but handles great normally.I've always had confidence in the front of it,unlike the ZX6R G2 i had which had really bad front end with no feel at all.

Take them for test rides see which one you like the most although if it was me i just couldn't resist the cbr600rr it is just sooooo beautiful!!!

Apparently the 99/00/01 R6's have some major problem with second gear at about 20,000 km's and you basically have to skip 2nd gear. There was a story that some guy got thrown off his R6 because of it and was killed. Yamaha didn't recall them to fix the problem but issued a discount on a replacement part(could be the entire gearbox). This is just what I read in another forum so if I'm wrong it's not actually me that's wrong

So what kind of money are you looking to spend?

Personally, I'd opt for the 600RR (no bias there ), especially if you're going for the pre-2005 model, as they should be discounted somewhat now. I've never really liked the Yamaha offerings, although the new Kawasakis and Suzukis are catching my eye.

The 600F and 600RR are different animals, so make sure that you've at least sat on both since you're considering them.

I wouldn't bother getting a new bike at such a stage in your biking career, as it would be better to get comfortable with home maintenance without worrying about warrantees etc. IMO.

I have the 600RR and shes great, just hit 550 miles on her and am gradually opening her up a bit. She handles great and looks even better. I have the 05 RR, but have been riding for over 10 years so I am pretty confident in myself to ride her to her limits. I wouldn't recommend one for a first 'big' bike, nor an R6 for that matter. A bandit 600 would be a better bet, but if your heart is set on a sports then I would go for an older CBR600F.
